Manzano Boys Come In Sixth at City Swim Meet
By Harold Smith
Mountain View Telegraph
Manzano High set five school records at the Albuquerque Public Schools Boys All-City Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday.
"I did great, and I got four school records, two individual and two with team relays," said Monarchs sophomore Taylor Busby at Albuquerque Academy's natatorium. "And I think the team did great, too. We have to thank our coach (Tammy Clarke). She always motivates us."
Despite a comparative lack of depth, Manzano finished in sixth place with 217 points.
The Monarchs' individual school records included:
Busby, 500-yard freestyle, 4 minutes, 54.18 seconds (third place); and 200 free, 1:48.18 (second).
Arne Meeuw, 100 butterfly, 52.65 (first).
Meeuw, a junior foreign-exchange student from Germany, also won the gold medal in the 200 individual medley. His time was 2:00.55.
In the relay races, Manzano established school marks with runner-up finishes in the 200 medley and 200 free relay events.
With the same quartet swimming both relays, the Monarchs clocked a 1:42.72 in the 200 medley and a 1:32.76 in the 200 free.
The foursome included senior Scott Olson, junior Phil Babicz, Meeuw and Busby.
The Manzano boys and girls will compete in their last meet prior to state at the Valley Pool quadrangular on Saturday. They will face Eldorado, Los Alamos and Los Lunas.
