Manzano Swimmers Place 5th
By Harold Smith
Mountain View Telegraph
Members of the Manzano boys swimming team individually grabbed three golds and three silvers to finish in fifth place at the Las Cruces High Invitational on Saturday.
At New Mexico State University's pool, the Monarchs scored 130 points. They trailed runner-up Highland, coached by Tijeras-area resident Reed Barnitz, by 118 points.
El Paso Franklin won the 12-team competition with 264.
"They're doing pretty well," Manzano coach Tammy Clarke said of her boys. "We have some top swimmers, but we still don't have the depth."
The Monarchs' gold medalists included:
Taylor Busby: 200-yard individual medley (2 minutes, 3.79 seconds).
Arne Meeuw: 100 butterfly (53.50) and 100 backstroke (56.31).
The silver medalists were:
Scott Olson: 100 back, 58.39.
"We went 1-2 in the back," Clarke said.
Phil Babicz: 100 freestyle (51.49).
Busby: 200 free (1:49.82).
Clarke said there is hope for future seasons.
"The (rookie) boys are improving," she said. "If they stay dedicated and have fun, they may surprise us."
MANZANO GIRLS
In the girls meet, the Lady Monarchs finished seventh in Cruces with 98 points. They earned three gold medals.
Marissa Campbell was first in the 100 fly (59.68) and the 100 free (54.76). Tiva North won the 200 free (2:10.31).
Manzano shadowed two of its Albuquerque counterparts. St. Pius was fourth at 152, and Highland placed sixth with 127. Franklin also won the girls team title.
The quest for depth on Manzano's girls team is another matter.
"We're struggling in that department," Clarke said.
There was no diving at the Las Cruces meet.
However, Clarke said Lauren Jaramillo, who lives in Tijeras, recently won the girls 1-meter event in a two-team diving scrimmage against Highland at the Sandia Pool.
Manzano boys and girls competed in a late meet, a quadrangular at Albuquerque Academy, on Wednesday.
Clarke said Monday some of her female swimmers might forgo or swim events in which they don't usually compete at the Academy quad. The girls' city meet is Jan. 21-22.
