Manzano High's Taylor Busby earned gold medals in the 200-yard individual medley and 100 butterfly during the 11-team Albuquerque Public Schools Boys All-City Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday.
Busby's winning times at the West Mesa Aquatic Center were 2 minutes, 1.27 seconds for the IM and 56.04 in the fly. Busby resides in Albuquerque.
Eric Lunsford of Tijeras helped the Monarchs' cause with a ninth-place finish in 1-meter diving Friday.
Busby and Lunsford combined to garner 64 percent of Manzano's 81 points. The Monarchs tied Valley for eighth place.
"I did well considering it was an 11-dive meet, and I had to learn three new dives during warmups," said Lunsford, a 5-foot-10 senior.
Eldorado's Blake Ferguson won the diving competition with 395.80 points. Lunsford had 157.50 in a field of nine, but the effort gave Manzano nine points. Scoring for each event went all the way to 16th place.
"Overall, (the Monarchs) improved on all their times," Manzano coach Tammy Wilson said. "They came here and swam their hearts out."
Senior Matt Jackson was 11th in the fly. Freshman Phillip Atencio, who's from Tijeras, swam in the 200 free relay and 400 free relay (13th).
MANZANO WRESTLING:
The Monarchs took seventh place with 68 points in the 11-team City Tournament at Eldorado on Saturday.
Manzano's Jordan Eye earned a silver medal in the 112-pound weight class.
The Monarchs also had three fourth-place finishers: Bryant Flores (130 pounds), Caleb Krumel (189) and Albert Gonzales (215). Krumel hails from Cedar Crest.
MORIARTY WRESTLING:
Four Pintos went undefeated at the six-team Deming Duals on Saturday.
Bradley Spence (125), Alex Griego (152), Eric Lucero (171) and Vincent Griego (189) were 5-0 at the meet. The Griegos are brothers.
Vincent Griego, the reigning Class 4A champion at 215, was the tournament MVP.
"We did pretty well," Moriarty coach Joey Gonzales said. "We've been running mornings. I want them ready to peak."
As a team, the Pintos (4-7 in duals) placed fourth with victories against Class 1A-3A's Wingate and Bayard Cobre and losses to the 4A hosts and 5A's Las Cruces High and Las Cruces Mayfield.
"We had too many holes in our lineup," said Gonzales. "We didn't have a 215, and we didn't bring a 119. And we're still teaching the basics to the lower weights."
Junior heavyweight Albino Gallardo got his first varsity pin at the tourney.
Moriarty will host the Pinto Duals on Saturday. The meet was postponed from Jan. 6 due to bad weather.
Sandia High, Del Norte, St. Pius, a probable Los Lunas and a possible third APS squad are expected to participate.
