Manzano Girls Splash to 4th at City Meet
By Harold Smith
Mountain View Telegraph
Hannah Mercier and Sanne van Swol accounted for 31.8 percent of Manzano High's scoring at the Albuquerque Public Schools' Girls All-City Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday.
The two East Mountains residents combined for 94 points 47 each to help the Lady Monarchs earn a fourth-place finish at the West Mesa Aquatic Center. Fourteen Manzano girls contributed to their 296-point effort at the 11-team competition.
Mercier took the silver medal in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1 minute, 16.54 seconds. La Cueva's Gabriela Mackiw was first in 1:11.15.
The Bears won the team title with 569 points. They were followed by Sandia High (326) and Eldorado (312).
"I'm very happy (with her breaststroke finish)," said Mercier, a sophomore from Sandia Park. "I had hurt my knee, so it was pretty exciting to just be here swimming."
In addition, Mercier was sixth in the 100 freestyle.
Van Swol, an East Mountain High freshman who is allowed to compete for the Monarchs, garnered the bronze in the 200 individual medley. She swam a 2:28.18, trailing the winner, La Cueva's Amanda Maez, by about 10 seconds.
Van Swol also was fifth in the 100 butterfly.
"I didn't do very well; I've been sick," van Swol said. "But I wanted to be here so I wouldn't let my relay team down."
The Manzano quartet of Marissa Campbell, Tiva North, Mercier and van Swol racked up 68 points with second-place showings in both the meet-opening 200 medley relay and the concluding 400 free relay. North and Campbell live in Albuquerque.
Campbell was the gold medalist in the 100 fly (1:00.37) and 100 backstroke (1:01.15).
"It's kind of sad that it's my last city meet," said North, a senior who placed fourth in the 200 free and sixth in the 500 free. "But I think we did good this year. I'm proud. I think we did well."
Lauren Jaramillo, a Monarchs senior from Tijeras, got the bronze medal in 1-meter diving on Friday with 253.05 points. Sophomore Jennifer Wylie of Sandia Park placed fourth.
"I think the team came out with a big heart," said Manzano coach Tammy Wilson. "They did pretty well."
Megan Baker, Andrea Lister, Terisse Brocato and Wylie took 10th in the 200 free relay Saturday. Baker and Brocato are EMHS sophomores.
"I'm getting better as I go ...," said Cedar Crest's Baker, who was 15th in the 200 free and 16th in the 500 free. "I went to (the USA Swimming) state meet in the mile. I'm better at endurance than I am in sprints."
The venue for girls diving was changed from the Valley Pool to West Mesa after the Telegraph's deadline last week, Wilson said.
MANZANO WRESTLING
The Monarchs took third place with 133 points at the 10-team Highland Invitational on Saturday.
Cibola was the team victor with 1511/2, and Gallup was second at 1371/2.
Manzano's tourney champs included Caleb Krumel (189), Justin Martinez (103) and Dan Wilkinson (140).
Krumel, a junior from Cedar Crest, defeated Gallup's Shylo Jones in a 9-2 decision.
MORIARTY WRESTLING
The Pintos (2-4 in duals) split their matches against Del Norte and West Mesa at the Knights' triangular on Jan. 17.
"We did pretty good against West Mesa," Moriarty coach Joey Gonzales said. "Against Del Norte, we did all right, but we could've done better."
The Knights, Moriarty's District 5-4A mate, beat the Pintos 37-30. Moriarty's Tierney Nymeyer-Trujillo (145 pounds) and Paul Alderete (215) won by fall.
The Pintos defeated the Mustangs 59-18 in the other match. Moriarty's winners by pin were Nelson Bench (140), Nymeyer-Trujillo (145), Eric Lucero (171), Vincent Griego (189) and Alderete (215).
The Pintos forfeited the heavyweight division. Their top three at 275 were injured.
In a makeup dual Tuesday, reigning Class 5A champion Eldorado smacked Moriarty 64-6 in the Pintos' All-Sports Practice Facility. Bradley Spence (125) got Moriarty's sole win via an Eagles forfeit.
Moriarty was to wrestle at the El Paso Bowie tourney this past weekend, but the meet was canceled because of the weather.
