Manzano, Matadors Tie For 1st at Swim Invite
By Harold Smith
Mountain View Telegraph
The Manzano High girls swimming-and-diving team tied for first place with Sandia High at the Lady Monarchs' invitational at the West Mesa Aquatic Center on Saturday.
Manzano and the Matadors both had 211 points in a five-team field.
In addition to first-place finishes from Tiva North (500-yard freestyle), Marissa Campbell (100 breaststroke), Ruthann Tibbetts (1-meter diving) and two relay teams, Tijeras' Sanne van Swol got a silver medal in the 500 for the Monarchs.
North clocked the distance race in 5 minutes, 56.75 seconds, and van Swol had a time of 5:59.34.
"It's real different in high school," said van Swol, a 5-foot-8 East Mountain High freshman who also competes for Kirtland Aquatic Club. "It's more about fun than how well you do. But I'd like to make finals at state at least one time in four years."
EMHS students can compete for the Manzano swimming team as long as they reside in the Monarchs' district.
Manzano's boys were second in their six-team meet with 210 points. Sandia won with 276.
The Monarchs' winners were Taylor Busby (200 individual medley) and their 200 medley and 200 free relay teams.
Tijeras' Eric Lunsford was second in 1-meter diving with 115.55 points, and Phillip Atencio, also of Tijeras, was fourth in the 100-yard butterfly (1:22.58). Edgewood's Robert Webb was fourth in the 100 backstroke (1:20.74).
MANZANO WRESTLING
The Monarchs competed at the Las Cruces High Invitational on Saturday.
"I did not get (Manzano's) team scores, but we were 16th out of 38 teams," Monarchs coach Michael Zufall wrote via e-mail Monday.
Rio Rancho was first with 233 points, and Belen took second with 206.
"We had Caleb Krumel take 3rd at 189 (pounds)," Zufall wrote. "He is a junior, first year on varsity and a mountain kid. Our kids did great. ... It is a highly competitive tournament and is great for the beginning of the season."
Krumel lives in Cedar Crest.
Manzano will contend in the Albuquerque Public Schools Invitational this weekend. The meet starts at 4:30 p.m. Friday and resumes at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
The tourney was to be held at La Cueva, but Bears coach Bob Kelly, a former Manzano athletic director, said the LCHS gym recently was flooded due to a water-line break. The APS meet will now be held at West Mesa.
MORIARTY WRESTLING
The Pintos placed second in the Capital tournament at Santa Fe High on Saturday.
Moriarty coach Joey Gonzales, who didn't get the team scores, said he believed there were 14 teams competing. He said Las Vegas Robertson was first, and Española Valley placed third.
The Pintos had three bronze medalists: senior Vincent Griego (215 pounds), junior Bradley Spence (125) and sophomore Saul Urbina (189).
"We had a lot of guys out due to the ACTs (college entrance exams) ...," Gonzales said. "Saul did a good job. He's a JVer, moved up. He was probably the biggest surprise of the meet. Everyone was commenting on his strength and ability."
The Pintos also will compete in the APS tournament at West Mesa this weekend.
