Baseball Tournaments Start Today in Moriarty
By Harold Smith
Mountain View Telegraph
The Moriarty American Amateur Baseball Congress city tournament kicks off today at 6 p.m. with the first game of the Roberto Clemente division 8-and-under playoffs.
The tournament runs through July 1, the day of the scheduled title contests.
All games will be played at Moriarty's sports complex, on Martinez Road about a mile east of N.M. 41.
Rhett Butler, the local league's vice president, said the 10U Willie Mays, 12U Pee Wee Reese and 14U Sandy Koufax city tourneys start Monday, also at the sports complex. Those age groups' championship games will be played July 1 as well, he said.
"There's a lot more parity this year," said Moriarty Vipers 8U coach Denny Young. "We were undefeated (in regular season play), and I do think we'll be OK. But I also do feel that there's more balance than last year. I think it'll be pretty tight."
The Vipers won the Clemente division city title last year by concession. The other teams conceded the Vipers were the winners without a playoff due to the Vipers' dominance during the regular season.
The Moriarty Yankees beat the Estancia Bears 19-5 for second place in 2005.
The Moriarty A's 10U squad took the Mays group by concession as well last year. The Estancia Diamondbacks edged the Estancia Bears 13-12 for the runner-up spot.
"This year, I think the (Moriarty) Red Sox and the Bears are the favorites," D'Backs coach Isabel Torres said. "The Cubs are new, but you never know. I don't want to count out the Cubs."
Torres acknowledged her team has had a pretty good season to date.
"I believe the Triple Crown tournaments really helped us out," she said. "And I do believe we have a chance at city. I think us and the Red Sox had one loss each (during the regular season)."
In 2005, the Moriarty A's knocked off the Moriarty Cobras 12-2 for the 14U Koufax city crown, and the Estancia Bears handily defeated the Moriarty Wolverines 14-9 for the 12U Reese title.
