Mountain View Telegraph
The Moriarty High girls track and field team— bolstered by five gold meals— took second place at the tough 10-team, multiclass Rolla Buck White Sands Relays in Alamogordo last Saturday.
"We really didn't have any practices this past week so I'm very pleased," said Pintos coach Joe Bailey of his boys and girls squads. "We missed four days of school... All in all, we're very happy."
The Class 4A Moriarty girls scored 88 points for the runner-up position. The host 5A Tigers won with 1181/2.
The Pintos boys were sixth with 371/2 points. Alamogordo was first with 1061/2.
    The Lady Pintos' winners included:

  • Morgan Dodd, long jump (15 feet, 103/4 inches). Dodd is the reigning state champ.

  • Deedee Bailey, 800-meter run (2 minutes, 32.8 seconds) and the 1,600 run (5:34.4). It was the second meet in a row Bailey swept these events.
"She's getting the most out of her physical abilities," Joe Bailey said. "It's great to see a senior where all the work is paying off."

  • Kat Sidlow, 300 hurdles, 50.67.
        "She was thrilled," Bailey said.

  • 1,600 medley relay: Brittney Sullivan, Niki Craig, Rebecca Rasbeck and Jana Bailey (4:36.6).
The silver medalists were Roni Romero, who tied the pole-vault school record at 9 feet, and Moriarty's 1,600 relay foursome (4:14.4).
The Pintos boys were paced by their first-place 4x400 relay quartet. Isaak Grano, Lorenz Stefan, Jordan Allcorn and Jacob Rasbeck together ran a 3:34.0 in the four-lap race.
"They all ran well, but Rasbeck ran a heck of an anchor leg to win it," Joe Bailey said.
Moriarty's 1,600 medley relay was second in 3:47.1.
D.J. Draper was third in the javelin.
Other placers included Grano and James Dorcey, respectively fourth and fifth in the shot put; Alonzo Castillo, fourth, 1,600 run; and Matt Sigala, fifth and sixth in the 110 and 300 hurdles.
"That was the first time (Sigala) has placed," the coach said.
The Pintos boys and girls will take on some premier competition at the Albuquerque Academy-hosted Charger Quad on Saturday.
In addition to Academy, Moriarty will face Rio Rancho and Los Alamos.
        MANZANO
The Lady Monarchs placed eighth at the 13-team Albuquerque Relays at Milne Stadium last Saturday.
Manzano earned 30 points, while Highland won with 73. The Monarchs took two silvers at the all-relays meet.
Caitlin Walker, Ashley Williams, Andrea Mascareñas and Jennifer Clark were second in the shuttle-hurdles event with a time of 1:11.93. Clark is an East Mountains resident.
Mascareñas, Williams and Tracy Diver were the runners-up in the triple-jump relay. The combined distance was 91-83/4.
The Manzano boys took ninth with nine points at the 13-team F.M. Wilson Relays at Wilson Stadium last Saturday.
The Monarchs were to compete at the Rolla Buck but changed their schedule.
At the Wilson meet, Academy was first with 93.
The Monarchs were led by Westly Clayton, Jered Metzger and Brandon Pierce. The trio had respective throw totals of 130-7 and 353-5 in the shot-put and discus relays for fourth place in both events. Clayton lives in Tijeras.
        EAST MOUNTAIN
The Timberwolves boys scored 12 points to place 14th at the 21-team Jim Burke Qualifier in Belen last Saturday.
Host coach Jim Edwards said Aztec won the meet with 76 points. Belen was second.
EMHS' Aaron Gallinger won the 400 dash in 51.40. He also was second in the 200 with a time of 23.08. Gallinger won the state Class 2A 400 in 2004.
        The Lady Timberwolves didn't score.
        ESTANCIA
The Bears boys and girls were to compete at the Jemez Valley meet last Saturday. But Estancia coach Grey Nevelos called off the trip.
"We weren't ready," Nevelos said. "We hadn't even practiced handoffs yet (because of lack of practices due to weather-related school closures)."
The Estancia Quadrangular is still a go, however. The Bears host Hope Christian, Tucumcari and Santa Rosa this afternoon.
