Telegraph Staff Reports
      Moriarty Hires Ruben — Again
John Ruben has been hired as the new baseball coach at Moriarty High, according to a news release from Joe Butler, the school's athletic director.
Ruben was previously the Pintos coach from 1991-96, Butler noted. He also served as an American Amateur Baseball Congress and American Legion coach for many of the current Moriarty players.
Ruben replaced Michael Chavez, who resigned from the post after eight years at the helm. The Pintos were 19-10, 10-5 in District 5-4A and advanced to the state quarterfinals this past spring.
Moriarty, with Chavez coaching, was the state Class 4A runner-up, in 2003 and 2007.
    Tijeras Boy Wins National Title
William Stanopiewicz, a Tijeras resident, was crowned as the USA Track and Field National Junior Olympics' bantam boys 1,500-meter run champion on Sunday at Burke Stadium in Omaha, Neb., according to the USATF Web site.
The 10-year-old, who competes for Albuquerque Athletics Track, had a winning, personal-record time of 4 minutes, 51.17 seconds, AAT assistant coach Carl Brasher confirmed. Stanopiewicz was also second in the 800 finals on Saturday with a PR clocking of 2:24.51.

    All-Star Grads Ready To Shine
Estancia High's David Ortiz and R.J. Rice will compete for the South in tonight's Class 1A-2A New Mexico High School Coaches Association All-Star Boys Basketball Game at the University of New Mexico's Pit. Tipoff is 6 p.m.
Then on Friday at 7 p.m., Moriarty High's Jason Watrin and Manzano High's Matt Raymer and Jeremy Lasusky will play for the North at the Class 4A-5A NMHSCA All-Star Football Game at University Stadium.

    Bowhunter Takes Gold Medal
Tammy Bredy, a Cedar Crest resident, won the archery 3D gold medal in the female bowhunter release division during the inaugural State Games of the West at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs on Sunday, according to the competition's Web site.
Bredy, who is the mother of boxer Holly Holm, also earned a silver medal on Saturday in the target category's female (18- to 54-year-old) freestyle bowhunter division.

    Volleyball Camp Begins Tuesday
Moriarty High will hold its annual summer volleyball camp, for girls in grades 7-12, at the Pintos' All-Sports Practice Facility starting Tuesday, according to a news release from the school's athletic department.
The camp, 1 to 4 p.m. each day, will continue through Aug. 7.
The fee for participation is $70. Emphasis is on skills instruction and playing.
For information, contact Moriarty coach Kim Bell at 832-5933 or 281-9808.
