    The Manzano High boys tennis team (2-6) got its first two duals wins of the season with back-to-back victories against Belen and Rio Grande.
    The Monarchs defeated Rio 7-2 in their opening District 5-5A matchup Tuesday at the Ravens' courts. They also beat the Class 4A Eagles 6-3 in Belen on April 3.
    Manzano's winners Tuesday were:

  • No. 1 singles— Phil Lopez def. Jesse Jorgensen 6-1, 6-0;

  • No. 2 singles— Sann Pham def. Melchor Quezada 6-0, 7-6;

  • No. 3 singles— Avery Gurule def. Lupe Saenz 6-0, 6-0;

  • No. 4 singles— Richard Pham def. A.J. Chavez 6-2, 6-4;

  • No. 6 singles— Justin Vuong def. Chris Gonzalez 6-3, 6-3;

  • No. 1 doubles— Pham-Pham def. Gonzalez-Saenz 8-1;

  • No. 2 doubles— Lopez-Gurule def. Jesus Hernandez-Chavez 8-1.
        The Lady Monarchs (3-5) also defeated Rio Grande 6-3 at Los Altos Park on Tuesday.
        The Manzano girls victors were:

  • No. 1 singles— Tara Rivera def. Claudia de Santiago 6-4, 6-0;

  • No. 3. singles— Rebecca Schoeny def. Rebecca Oaxaca 6-3, 6-1;

  • No. 4 singles— Jazmine Burt def. Olga Ramirez 6-2, 6-1;

  • No. 5 singles— Alisia Dow def. Alicia Romero 6-2, 6-1;

  • No. 2 doubles— Burt-Dow def. Oaxaca-Ramirez 8-3;

  • No. 3 doubles— Katie Halpern-Amy Nim def. Romero-Alexis Alvidrez 8-3.
        Dow and Halpern are East Mountains residents.
        Belen defeated the Manzano girls 6-3 on the Eagles' courts April 3.
        "I continue to be impressed by (the boys and girls) teams' dedication to progressive play and to good sportsmanship," Monarchs coach Megan Brewer wrote via e-mail on Wednesday. "With the second half of the season off to a winning start, I am sure we will see many more impressive demonstrations by Manzano tennis before the district and state tournaments."
        The Monarchs will play Volcano Vista today at 3:30 p.m. The boys will play at Los Altos, and the girls will be at Don Juan de Oñate Park.

    Golf
        Manzano golfers Angelo Fitch and Jennifer Wylie shot state-qualifying rounds at the Del Norte Invitational played at Arroyo del Oso Golf Course on Tuesday.
        Wylie, who lives in Sandia Park, shot a 96 to tie for fifth place. Fitch of the Paa-Ko area scored an 80, also for a fifth-place tie.
        The Moriarty boys, meanwhile, competed in the Española Valley-hosted Sundevil Invitational on March 31 and April 1. The Pintos played the first day on the Towa Golf Course in Pojoaque, and the second day at the Black Mesa Course in La Mesilla.
        "Everybody shot in the 90s on both days," Moriarty coach Frank Gonzalez said.
        The Pintos also competed in the Capital City Invitational on Monday. The competition was hosted by Santa Fe High at the Santa Fe Country Club.
        Moriarty junior Jordan Schenk shot a 94.

    Soccer
        Lalania Kolek, who coached the Manzano girls the past two years, on Wednesday said that she was "forced to resign" her position.
        Jodie Robertson was recently named as Kolek's replacement. Kolek indicated it was her sense that she was pushed out to make room for Robertson, who Kolek said is a physical education teacher at Manzano.
        "I was surprised," Kolek said. "I took them from a 16th-ranked team to a sixth-ranked team," the former coach said. "I loved the kids. I loved my job. Now, I wish them success."
        Manzano Athletics Director Brett Tomlinson would not comment on the reason for Kolek's departure.
