    Season Starting
    For Little League
East Mountain Little League will hold its opening day ceremonies for the 2008 season at its home fields at Vista Grande Community Center on Saturday at noon, according to a news release from Karen Demarest, EMLL's president.
In addition, the league will host a Challenger Division exhibition game at Vista Grande with a start time of about 10:45 a.m. on Saturday. EMLL players will act as buddies for the Challenger players, who are special-needs kids.
EMLL continues to need a couple more volunteers who would act as umpires for its baseball and softball games. Umps must be willing to volunteer their time for 2-3 hours per game, at least one night a week or on Saturdays during the months of April, May and June. Anyone over the age of 18 is encouraged to sign up.
For information, call Demarest at 286-1484.
    Roosevelt Golfers
    First at Tourney
The Roosevelt Middle School boys varsity golf team won the middle-school golf tournament at Puerto del Sol Golf Course on March 29, according to a news release from RMS assistant coach Kent Storey and his wife, Leah.
The Rams defeated teams from throughout Albuquerque, including Desert Ridge Middle School and Hope Christian. Roosevelt is coached by Ted Otero-Madrid.
The boys team included Grant Storey (38, first place, nine holes), Nate Lopez (44), Alyn Melloy (44) and Tony Fitch (47).
Roosevelt's Alexis Wylie was third in the girls' competition with a 55.

    To Get Oriented
Manzano High will hold its annual eighth-grade athletic orientation night in the school's Performing Arts Center on April 23 at 7 p.m.
All current eight-graders who will attend Manzano next school year and who plan on or are considering their participation in a Monarchs sport should attend. A parent or guardian also should be present.
For information, e-mail Manzano athletic director Brett Tomlinson at senorbrett@msn.com.
    Lady Monarchs
    Get New Coach
Jodie Robertson will be the new girls soccer coach at Manzano High beginning in the 2008-09 school year, the school's athletic director, Brett Tomlinson, said on Monday.
Lalania Kolek, who guided the Lady Monarchs for two years, resigned, Tomlinson said. Kolek had an overall record of 19-23.
Manzano was 12-10, 4-4 in District 5-5A this past fall. The Monarchs qualified for the 2007 state tournament at which they were 1-1 in pool play.
