By Harold Smith
Mountain View Telegraph
The Manzano High girls tennis team (2-4) swamped Del Norte 8-1 in a cross-class matchup at Los Altos Park on Monday.
The singles results, with the Lady Monarchs in boldface, included:

  • No. 1— Tara Rivera def. Nicolette Dolan, by forfeit

  • No. 2— Ashley Clevenger def. Alejandra Gaytan 6-4, 6-3

  • No. 3— Shaina St. Lot def. Jazmine Burt 6-2, 6-1

  • No. 4— Kassandra Carson def. Gloria Thomas 6-4, 2-6, 6-3

  • No. 5— Alisia Dow def. Rosie Garay, 6-1, 6-1

  • No. 6— Brittney Cappel, def. Denitria Gomez 6-1, 6-3
        The doubles scores were:

  • No. 1— Rivera-Clevenger def. Gayton-Dolan 8-3

  • No. 2— Amy Nim-Rebecca Schoeny def. Thomas-Garay 8-4

  • No. 3— Katie Halpern-Carson def. St. Lot-Gomez 9-7
Dow is an Edgewood resident. Halpern lives in Sandia Park.
"The girls are definitely improving every game," Manzano coach Megan Brewer said. "I have high hopes for them in the second half of the season. But we've got some good competition ahead of us."
Manzano's first District 5-5A match is scheduled for Tuesday against Rio Grande at Los Altos. The Monarchs then play Volcano Vista before they compete in the Albuquerque Public Schools City Tournament on April 14-19.
On paper, it doesn't look so good for the Monarchs boys (0-6). They have yet to win a dual after falling to Del Norte 5-4 on Monday.
"But the boys are hanging in there," Brewer said. "They're getting better, too. It was really close at Del Norte."
Manzano's individual winners included Sann Pham (No. 2) and Craig Jones (No. 5). In doubles, the successful Monarchs were Avery Gurule and Jones (No. 2) and Phil Lopez and Sammy Chumpulpakdee (No. 3).
        Jones is from Cedar Crest.
The Manzano boys lost their two matches at the Valley Duals, played March 21-22 at the Jerry Cline Tennis Complex. Belen beat the Monarchs 3-2, and Alamogordo defeated Manzano 5-0.
The Lady Monarchs also dropped two at the Valley competition. Belen won 3-2, and Valley defeated Manzano 4-1.
