    Umpires Needed
    For Little League
East Mountain Little League is looking for few good men, or women, who would be willing to act as umpires for its baseball and softball games, according to a news release from EMLL president Karen Demarest.
The local league will hold an umpire training and information clinic at its home fields at Vista Grande Community Center in Sandia Park on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Umpires must be willing to volunteer their time for 2-3 hours per game, at least one night a week or on Saturdays during the months of April, May and June. Anyone over the age of 18 is encouraged to sign up for umpire training.
For information, call Demarest at 286-1484.
EMLL'S 2008 season-opening ceremony will be held at noon on April 12 at Vista Grande.
    Fundraiser Goes
    To Athletic Dept.
The Moriarty High athletic department will kick off its Chevy Truck Raffle fundraiser with an assembly for student-athletes and parents at John B. Salvo Gym on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
According to a news release from Moriarty athletic director Joe Butler, the goal of the fundraising effort is to garner $50,000 to support the school's athletic department operating budget for the 2008-09 school year.
Raffle tickets, at a cost of $10 each— $80,000 gross, $50,000 net after expenses— will be on sale beginning Wednesday. The drawing will be held on May 8.
The first-place prize will be a 2008 Chevy Colorado, four-wheel-drive club-cab pickup as provided at cost by Tillery Chevrolet in Moriarty. Other prizes include a four-wheel all-terrain vehicle, $2,000 in furniture, and two 42-inch flat-screen TVs.
For information, call the high school athletic office at 823-5951.
    'Bear' Memorial
    This Weekend
Sandia Motocross will host the Bill "Bear" Hensley Memorial Race on Sunday.
The event will honor Hensley, a Moriarty resident and motocross enthusiast, who died unexpectedly on Feb. 22, one day short of his 51st birthday.
The event will feature the regular races and will add two free classes, especially dedicated to Hensley. Practice runs begin at 8:30 a.m., and a prerace ceremony will start about 9 or 9:30 a.m., Sandia Motocross president Bob Clark said.
Sandia Motocross Park is on Albuquerque's West Side, west of the crest of Nine Mile Hill.
The Bears Buds Class, an over-40 open/no-jump class, is for all riders over 40 who raced, rode with or knew Bear and would like to line up at the gate and take a lap in his honor.
"Helmets and over-the-ankle boots is all that is required for this class ... And a bike that runs, of course," the Web site noted.
The other special class is the Bears' Kids Class, for all those 40 and under who knew Hensley, rode with or were trained by him. It will be a one-lap race.
For information, see the Web site at www.sandiamx.com.
    Pinto Selected As
    Player of Year
Moriarty High Kristin Valencia, a 5-foot-9 multiple-position player, recently was selected as the 2007-08 District 5-4A girls basketball player of the year.
Brandi Valencia, Kristin's twin sister, and Pintos senior Jacki Bailey made the all-district team.
    Snodgrass Makes
    All-District Cut
Ricky Snodgrass, a Moriarty High junior, recently made the 2007-08 all-District 5-4A boys basketball squad.
Snodgrass was a 6-foot-3 forward. St. Pius' Chris Johansen was named as the district's player of the year.
    Monarchs Need
    New Soccer Coach
Manzano High is looking to hire a new boys soccer coach.
Monarchs coach Brett Tomlinson will be moving out of state following this school year.
For information on the vacant position or to submit an application, call Tomlinson at 559-2318 or e-mail him at senorbrett@msn.com.
