Lady T'Wolves Start Season 'On a Roll'

By Harold Smith
Mountain View Telegraph
    So far, so good.
East Mountain High softball coach Denise Whipple said the Lady Timberwolves would be pretty good this season. And to date, her prediction is right on target.
EMHS won its first three games of 2008.
The T'Wolves defeated the Las Vegas Robertson junior varsity 11-1 and 15-0 in a doubleheader at Vista Grande Community Center on March 12. East Mountain also beat Jemez Valley 4-3 in an extremely early District 2/1A-2A matchup at Vista Grande on Tuesday.
"I agree with you; we are on a roll," Whipple said. "But we do have some rough edges we need to work out. If we can do that, we should have a very good year."
Rachel Sanderson, a Moriarty transfer, was the winning EMHS pitcher in all three contests.
The Timberwolves also played a late game Wednesday against Mora at Vista Grande. The Rangers' game was moved up from today, its originally scheduled date.

Moriarty
The Lady Pintos (3-2) defeated Los Alamos 13-5 at Moriarty's field on Tuesday.
"We hit the ball well," Pintos coach Brett McWilliams said. "Sonya (Chavez) was 3-for-4 with a triple, and Kathleen (Nixon) was 3-for-4. They were my two best hitters."
Freshman Morgan McWilliams, the coach's daughter, got the pitching win.
"She had eight strikeouts and allowed four hits," the coach said.
    On the other hand....
"But we had five errors," Brett McWilliams said. "I think offensively we played well, but we can't have five errors in a game."
Moriarty will compete in the two-day Rio Rancho tournament starting Friday.

Estancia
The Lady Bears (1-3) hope to peak at the end as they seek to improve in every game.
The Class 4A Moriarty junior varsity defeated Estancia's 2A varsity 26-16 at the Pintos' field on March 13.
The Bears edged 2A Tucumcari 14-12 in Estancia on Saturday. But Dexter downed EHS 13-1 at the Blue Demons' field on Tuesday.
"We were up 1-0 (vs. Dexter) until the fifth inning," Bears coach Michael Dominguez said. "Then they rolled off nine runs on us. We can't seem to finish a game. If the game had ended in five innings, it would have been a nice, little 1-0 win for us."
Dominguez has faith his charges will ultimately respond.
"I think they'll be ready," he said. "I think we have the ability to win. I just need to get the girls to believe in themselves."

Manzano
The Lady Monarchs (2-6) defeated La Cueva 5-1 on the Purple Pride's diamond on Tuesday.
Sophomore Evangeline Samora, coach Arthur Samora's daughter, was the winning pitcher.
The victory followed a roller-coaster journey in the 16-team Southern New Mexico Tournament held at Las Cruces' Field of Dreams on Friday and Saturday. The tourney results included:

  • Anthony Gadsden defeated Manzano 10-8 on Friday.

  • Manzano beat Gallup High 9-3 on Friday.

  • Las Cruces Mayfield blanked the Monarchs 4-0 on Saturday.

  • Eldorado, in a pre-district matchup against a 5-5A foe, doubled up on Manzano 12-6 on Saturday.
But don't call the Monarchs a Jekyll and Hyde outfit.
"It's just that we were giving some kids some reps in different positions during the tournament," Arthur Samora said.
