Manzano Senior Leads Lady Monarchs at Meet
Mountain View Telegraph
Matt Stoltzfus and Nick Linden got off to a good start.
The Manzano High duo, both of whom live in Tijeras, garnered silver medals at the Albuquerque Public Schools Kick-Off Track and Field Meet at Milne Stadium on Saturday.
Stoltzfus, a senior, was second in the C-meet 400-meter dash with a time of 51.47 seconds. Linden, a junior, leaped 19 feet, 9 inches in the long jump.
The "C" in C-meet identifies one of three varsity meets conducted simultaneously at Milne. The designator does not denote the level of talent.
Monarchs boys coach Harvey Carreathers isn't bubbling over with enthusiasm just yet. His team placed fourth overall with 25 points.
Cibola won the seven-team meet with 16 gold medals and 193 points. Manzano, right now, is short on athletes.
"We need a little more depth," Carreathers said. "We had five to six sprinters out there (Saturday). But to do anything, you really need eight to 10. We hope to get a couple more. Hopefully, some of the basketball players will come out."
Also for Manzano, Michael Montoya was third in the 1,600 run (4 minutes, 46.52 seconds) and Chris Quintana of Sandia Park earned the bronze in the 800 run (2:04.22).
Manzano girls
Megan Baldonado garnered two bronze medals to pace the Lady Monarchs to a fifth-place finish at the girls' APS Kick-Off C-meet at Wilson Stadium on Saturday.
The senior from Tijeras ran the 300 hurdles in 58.03 and threw the javelin 79-3.
"She does have potential," Manzano girls coach John Flores said.
Monarchs Danielle Carver and Anna Haschke also took third, Carver in the triple jump (29-11) and Haschke in the open 800 (2:45.26). In addition, the Manzano quartet of Sondai Lonesome, Monquisha Coleman, Jo Lonesome and Carnuel's Rachel Bean took second in the 800 relay (1:51.57).
However, like Carreathers, Flores isn't ready to proclaim his team as state-meet contenders just yet. The Monarchs placed fourth overall at state in 2007.
"You need to light a fire under them without going overboard," Flores said. "We have a couple soccer players who are committed, but then again, aren't. Monquisha should eventually end up in her four or five events. But we're missing a kid in the relays to really make them go like last year."
Cibola won the girls meet, too, with 112 points. Manzano accumulated 30 points.
East Mountain
Lady Timberwolves freshman Georgia Kaufman earned EMHS its sole point at the Gadsden Classic in Anthony on Saturday.
Kaufman ran an unofficial 6:19 in the 1,600 run for sixth place. East Mountain coach Therese Dorwart said 23 teams competed at the meet, with "a lot of 5A teams and teams from Texas there".
Dorwart said they departed before the complete results were posted. The T'Wolves boys didn't score.
There were some positives coming out of East Mountain's opener. Four Timberwolves set personal records, including Kaufman (1,600), Sam Cordova (800), Matt Broomfield (1,600) and Mario Martinez (200 dash).
"It was a nice meet to go to to start establishing some times," Dorwart said.
Moriarty
The Pintos boys and girls open the spring season at the APS meet on Saturday.
Moriarty track coach Joe Bailey was still coaching the Lady Pintos basketball team this week, but he will concentrate on his track squad beginning this weekend.
