Brewer to Helm Monarchs Tennis

By Harold Smith
Mountain View Telegraph
Megan Brewer is one busy woman.
With the resignations of Manzano High boys coach Don Larrichio and Lady Monarchs coach Alisa Keller, the 25-year-old former Gallup prep player has assumed command of the Purple Pride's boys and girls tennis programs this season.
"I was pleasantly surprised with the talent at Manzano," said Brewer, who earned a bachelor's degree in humanities from Marymount Manhattan after playing on the reserve women's team for San Diego State three years.
Brewer knows how to multitask. She has a master's in public relations from New York University and, while getting her education, spent some time pursuing an acting career in New York and Southern California.
Currently, the coach works from 3 to 9 a.m. every day from her home where she reviews, via the Internet, news articles generated by major media pertaining to the NBA. She compiles a seven-days-a-week report for the professional basketball organization.
Meanwhile, Brewer seems eager to tackle her side job. The Monarchs boys finished the 2007 season at 0-11, 0-2 in District 5-5A, and the girls were 3-9, 1-2.
"It's a bit of a challenge coaching both teams," she said. "I'll have to catch catnaps here and there."
The Manzano girls defeated Albuquerque High 6-3 in their opener at the Albuquerque Tennis Club on Tuesday. AHS beat the boys 8-1 at Los Altos Park on Tuesday.
When the two teams are at different locations, Manzano athletic director Brett Tomlinson will guide one team while Brewer takes the other.
The Monarchs will play in the Albuquerque Public Schools Singles Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
From No. 1 through No. 8, the Manzano boys are Sann Pham, David Santiago, Cole Vertikoff, Phil Lopez, Avery Gurule, Richard Pham, Sammy Chumpulpakdee and Chris Del Barga. Craig Jones, the usual No. 4, won't play due to a death in his family.
The girls are Tara Rivera, Jazmine Burt, Kassandra Carson, Ashley Clevenger, Katie Halpren, Rebecca Schoeny, Amy Nim and Alysia Dow.
A "sense of responsibility and discipline" is what the coach said she primarily wants to instill in her players.
GOLF: Manzano's boys and girls will be guided by sixth-year coach John Beaver. Moriarty's new coach is Frank Gonzalez.
The Pintos competed at the Belen tourney on Monday. The boys took sixth, while the girls didn't make the trip.
Kyle Linker and Mark McFall are the Monarchs' top boys.
"We have an outside chance for qualifying for state," Beaver said.
The No. 1 girl is junior Jennifer Wylie of Sandia Park.
"She's the only (girl) who can really play golf at this point," the coach said.
