Giles Could Be
New Estancia AD
Dusty Giles might or might not be the man who replaces current Estancia High athletics director Mike Draper, who said in January that he was resigning and that his last day will be June 30.
Giles, who has headed the football program at Escalante High in Tierra Amarilla the past two seasons, acknowledged in a telephone interview Tuesday that he had applied for the EHS AD and football coaching positions.
"But I haven't signed a contract yet, and I haven't turned in my resignation at Escalante yet," said Giles, who would not elaborate.
Giles previously was an assistant coach at Artesia. He also was being considered for the head football job at Los Lunas.
Draper said he didn't know the status of the hiring of his replacement. Estancia Principal Doreen Winn said she could not comment and requested that personnel-related questions be directed to Carolyn Allen-Renteria, Estancia's district superintendent.
Allen-Renteria did not immediately return the Telegraph's phone calls.
Monarchs Boys Need
Soccer, Tennis Coach
Manzano High is looking to hire a new boys soccer coach.
Monarchs coach Brett Tomlinson said he will be moving to Colorado after this school year.
Manzano was 5-14-1, 1-7 in District 5-5A in 2007. The Monarchs did not qualify for the state tournament.
Tomlinson was 33-47-1 overall in four seasons. Manzano advanced to the state quarterfinals in 2005 and made it to the first round in 2004.
Manzano also remains in dire need of a boys tennis coach.
For information on either vacant position or to submit an application, call Tomlinson, also the school's athletic director, at 559-2318 or e-mail him at senorbrett@msn.com.
Moriarty Girl
Grappler Second
Marjolein Lopez, a Moriarty High senior, earned the silver medal in the high school division's 125-pound weight class at the state female wrestling championships at Cibola on Feb. 24.
"I've been working with her for six years," said Pintos assistant coach Janice Portillo, who previously spent five years coaching wrestling at Edgewood Middle School. "I started crying (after the match) because I realized we were done now."
Portillo said she believes Lopez could get a college wrestling scholarship competing with a women's program, such as Arizona State or other universities "in the cold states, like Minnesota."
Female wrestling is growing in popularity, Portilla said.
"Girls (prep) wrestling is separate in Texas," she said. "We went to a meet (this season), and they had 33 full teams there."
Manzano's Dow
Makes First Team
Manzano High senior basketball player Isaac Dow, who lives in Edgewood, was selected for the all-District 5-5A first team, according to a news release from district chairman Bob Kelly.
Three Monarchs made the all-district second team. They are juniors Jordan Burd and Mark Tenorio and sophomore Kyle Lantz.
Burd also lives in Edgewood.
Manzano junior Whitney Poloksy, who resides in Tijeras, was named to the girls all-district second team.
