Monarchs Bomb From Downtown in Win
Mountain View Telegraph
The 10th-ranked Manzano High boys basketball team (16-10, 4-4) aided by 25 3-pointers is on a three-game District 5-5A winning streak.
The Monarchs' last previous back-to-back wins occurred on Jan. 5 and 11.
The Monarchs beat Rio Grande 76-64 at the Ravens' gym on Friday. They defeated Eldorado 61-49 on the road in their final regular-season game Tuesday.
Manzano's win against EHS avenged a 53-39 loss at home on Feb. 1. The Monarchs' current run began with a 60-57 upset of No. 5 Los Lunas on the Purple Pride's court on Feb. 12.
Manzano's Kyle Lantz scored 20 points, including six treys, on Tuesday. The victory earned the Monarchs the third-place berth in next week's district tourney, Manzano athletic director Brett Tomlinson said Wednesday morning.
The Monarchs, who trailed Rio Grande 17-16 in the first quarter, outscored the Ravens 20-11 and 21-13 in the second and third periods. Manzano had a 57-41 lead going into the final eight minutes.
"We made a little adjustment," Monarchs coach Travis Julian said. "They were doing ball screens. We would either foul, or they would split between us."
In response, Julian told his players to keep the Ravens in front of them on defense. And the Monarchs "stopped fouling," he said.
Manzano's Jordan Burd, who lives in Edgewood, poured in 20 points at Rio Grande.
"Our kids played hard in the third quarter," Julian said.
The Monarchs are a bit dependent on the long ball.
"Yes, but we don't want to be," Julian said. "We emphasize penetration, but we don't have a true big man. And we have some guys who can shoot the ball. But when we don't hit the 3s, you've seen what happens."
Manzano girls
The Lady Monarchs (7-19, 1-7) ended the regular season on a high note despite losing their last eight games.
Manzano took second-ranked Eldorado into overtime on Tuesday night before falling to the Eagles 50-44 in a district home game.
"We had them," Monarchs coach Raul Diaz said. "My girls believed. They were awesome. We just didn't close it out."
April Semler, who lives in Yrisarri, led Manzano with 14 points.
"But 'almost' didn't get it," Diaz said. "The pressure was hard on us at the end. But it was good to go after Eldorado like that."
Rio Grande defeated the Monarchs 62-43 at the Raven's gym on Feb. 14.
"I just think they outplayed us," Diaz said. "We're still trying to gel as a team, and we still play in spurts."
Manzano's Whitney Polosky of Tijeras scored 13 points at Rio.
"It may not look like it sometimes, but we're starting to grow," Semler said after the loss to the Ravens. "I love our new coaches. They're a breath of fresh air."
East Mountain boys
The Timberwolves (5-18, 0-5) fell 54-38 in a District 8-2A game at Menaul on Friday.
Wriley Burnett had 17 points for East Mountain.
"We were right with them there for a while," EMHS coach Wade Swift said. "We just couldn't hit the shots."
No. 7 Estancia beat the host T'Wolves 70-55 in district action at Roosevelt Middle School on Tuesday.
EMHS girls
The Lady Timberwolves (5-19, 0-5) lost 47-39 in overtime at Menaul on Friday.
"We tied it up (at 36 at the end of regulation)," East Mountain coach Jim Pendergast said. "We had one of our better out-of-bounds plays, and Savanna (Hands) made a good move and made the basket (with about 1.5 seconds left)."
Both teams played the final minutes with four players each on the floor.
Estancia defeated the T'Wolves 58-25 at Roosevelt on Tuesday.
