    Local Cowboy Is
    Top Bull Rider
Travis Briscoe, who hails from Edgewood, won the Professional Bull Riders' Table Mountain Casino Invitational in Fresno, Calif., on Friday, according to a PBR news release.
"It's pretty awesome to win $105,000 in one night," said the 20-year-old— as quoted in the release— of his victory in the PBR's first-ever winner-take-all competition. "My first (Built Ford Tough Series) event win was here in 2006, but I missed the event in 2007. ... This is definitely my favorite event."
Briscoe is now in first place in the BFTS standings with 2,405.75 points. He's also the leading money winner so far this season with $145,683.67.
Briscoe also won the Worcester (Mass.) Classic on Jan. 11-13. He rode Copperhead Slinger and garnered 95 points.
Not since 2004, when fellow New Mexican Michael Gaffney, a former PBR world champion, scored a record-tying 961/2 points, has a rider scored as high as Briscoe. Only 19 rides in PBR history have earned more than 95 points.
Briscoe did not compete in Saturday's Sacramento (Calif.) Classic after reinjuring a sprained groin in Fresno.
If he's healthy, Briscoe is expected to compete in the PBR's Ty Murray Invitational at Albuquerque's Tingley Coliseum on March 28-30.
    Rodeo Committee
    To Meet Tuesday
The Moriarty Heritage Rodeo Committee will meet next week for a brainstorming session.
The meeting will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Moriarty Civic Center.
For more information, call the City Clerk's Office at 832-4406 during normal business hours.
    Monarchs Need
    New Tennis Coach
Manzano High is in dire need of a boys tennis coach.
Don Larrichio, who coached the Monarchs boys the last two seasons and the girls in 2005, said he resigned in August in order to concentrate on his league coordinator and instructor duties at the City of Albuquerque's Jerry Cline Tennis Center. But his replacement at Manzano still has yet to be found, Manzano athletic director Brett Tomlinson said.
Manzano's boys had a duals record of 0-11, 0-2 in District 5-5A last year.
For information on the vacant position or to submit an application, call Tomlinson at 559-2318 or e-mail him at senorbrett@msn.com.
Megan Brewer was hired in December to replace Lady Monarchs coach Alisa Keller, Tomlinson said. Keller resigned after two years at Manzano to take over the boys team at the new Volcano Vista High.
The Monarchs girls were 3-9, 1-2 in 2007.
    Pintos Boys Soccer
    Coach Resigns
Matt McCoin has resigned as the Moriarty High boys soccer coach, the school's athletic director, Joe Butler, recently announced via a news release.
McCoin, who was the Pintos coach for two seasons, said last week that he needs to devote more time to his job. The Pintos were 5-15, 3-7 in District 5-4A in 2007.
McCoin will continue as an assistant softball coach. Interested applicants for the newly opened position may contact Butler at 832-5947 for information.
