The Estancia Shockers defeated the Estancia Tiger Sharks 16-2 in the Moriarty Baseball League’s 8-and-under Roberto Clemente-division title game at Moriarty’s sports complex Saturday.
“We had to come from behind in the last two games of the tournament to get into the championship game,” Shockers coach Antonio Chavez said. “We were, like, 18-1 for the season. Our team did excellent. Our closest game (in the regular season) was, like, 12-2. Then we got a little overconfident toward the end of the tournament. But the boys — they’re just 7 and 8 years old — came back and got it done.”
The winning pitcher was Joseph Modling. The Shockers’ key batsmen were Cruz Moreno, Moises Anaya and Mateo Newsom.
To advance to the finals, the Shockers got a walk-off, inside-the-park grand slam from Julian Sanders in the bottom of the fifth inning to edge the Mountainair Mustangs 8-7 earlier Saturday, Shockers assistant coach Ralph Lucero said. The victorious Estancia squad snuck past the Tiger Sharks 11-10 on July 19 and beat the Moriarty Angels 12-2 on July 17 during the double-elimination tournament’s early rounds.
The American Amateur Baseball Congress Clemente state tourney starts today at the sports complex and will continue through Sunday.
Sandy Koufax
The Moriarty Heat is the sole 14U team in the MBL and as such is the league champion. The Heat will automatically advance to the AABC Koufax state tournament to be played in Santa Fe on July 6-11, Moriarty coach Joel Shipman said.
The Heat is 7-7 in regular-season interleague play and will play in about eight more games before state. The team split its games with the Horsemen of St. Michael’s and the Albuquerque Baseball Academy at the complex Saturday.
The ABA squad beat Moriarty 20-0, and the Heat defeated the Horsemen 12-2. Moriarty’s James Lee was the winning pitcher versus St. Michael’s.
“We just need to hit the ball and not make so many errors, and be confident in each other and help each other out to be competitive at state,” Shipman said.
Pee Wee Reese
The MBL 12U championship tourney began Tuesday and continues through this weekend at the sports complex. The teams vying for the local crown included the Express, Big Dawgs, Diamondbacks and Bears.
The championship game is scheduled for Saturday at 5 p.m. with an “if” game set for Sunday. The AABC Reese state tournament will be held July 9-12 in Las Cruces.
