Telegraph Staff Reports

School Counselor Wins New Truck Victor Gonzales, a ninth-grade counselor at Moriarty High, won the school athletic department's fundraiser raffle grand prize, a maroon 2008 Chevrolet Colorado four-door, four-wheel pickup truck in a drawing in front of John B. Salvo Gym on Tuesday evening.
The 57-year-old Moriarty resident, who said he didn't think he would win, wasn't present when his name was called by athletic director Joe Butler. But Gonzales came quickly after Pintos track and field coach Joe Bailey, who sold him the winning ticket, called to tell him he had won.
“I didn't even think I had a shot at this,” said a grinning Gonzales, who drove up in his 1989 Nissan pickup. “I only bought four tickets.”
Glen Tillery of Tillery Chevrolet, which provided the truck at cost, was on hand to present the vehicle to Gonzales, who has been with MHS for five years.
Several additional prizes were also awarded courtesy of other businesses. But the important thing for Butler, his coaches and the Moriarty athletes is that the raffle netted close to $38,000 to go toward supporting the school's athletic department. Student-athletes, coaches, parents and other volunteers sold a total of $67,130 of $10 tickets. That doesn't include a few that were sold just prior to the drawing.
Pintos football coach Bob Allcorn led the coaches in sales at 334 tickets. Senior Kyle Wolf paced the athletes with 148, and the cheerleaders sold 163 percent of their allotted goal.
“It was a lot of effort on the part of the coaches and athletes,” Butler said.

Sandia Park's Barr Wins Scholarship Manzano High senior Travis Barr was awarded the male scholar-athlete's George J. Maloof Scholarship during a luncheon at the Hotel Albuquerque on May 13, according to a story in the Albuquerque Journal.
Barr, who resides in Sandia Park, received a $10,000 scholarship to attend an in-state institution. He said he will go to New Mexico State University and hopes to major in civil engineering or architecture.
The annual award, which started in 1979, is judged by a panel of Albuquerque community leaders and is based on athletics (50 percent), academics (40 percent) and out-of-school activities (10 percent). Barr had a 3.768 grade-point average and took honors classes.
Barr was a captain on both the football and wrestling teams and competed in track and field. He won the Class 5A 215-pound title at the state wrestling championships in February.
Eldorado High's Christina Faris was awarded the Maloof female athlete scholarship.

Girls Hoops Camps Planned for June Moriarty High will host its annual girls basketball camp for girls in grades 8-12 on June 2-4, 10 a.m. to noon each day, at the school's All-Sports Practice Facility, according to a news release from athletic director Joe Butler.
Emphasis is on shooting and ball handling.
In addition, a hoops camp for girls in grades 1-6 will be held at the school on June 16-19, 10 a.m. to noon each day. Emphasis is on basic skills.
       Each camp costs $30.
For information, call Lady Pintos coach Joe Bailey at 832-5951 or 832-6725.

Moriarty Hires New Boys Soccer Coach Michael Berroteran has been hired as the new Moriarty High boys soccer coach, according to a news release from Joe Butler, the school's athletic director.
“Coach Berroteran served as the (Pintos boys) junior-varsity coach this past season and has coached area club and youth-league teams for over a decade,” Butler wrote in an e-mail on May 15.
Berroteran takes over the program immediately, including the coordination of its summer workouts. The voluntary preseason practices will be held on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the high school fields — behind Moriarty Middle School — beginning July 8.
Berroteran replaced Matt McCoin, who resigned after two seasons. Moriarty was 5-15, 3-7 in District 5-4A this past fall.
Prospective players and their parents may contact Berroteran at 948-8432.

Center Fielder Signs With Luna Jennifer Inocencio, a 5-foot 4-inch center fielder and backup pitcher for the Moriarty High softball team, signed a National Letter of Intent on May 15 to play for Luna Community College in Las Vegas, N.M., next school year, the Pintos senior said Saturday.
“To be able to sign in front of my teammates (during the state tournament in Farmington) was great,” she said. “And to do it on a softball field was the best.”

Bragging Rights On Line in Madrid The 26th annual Bragg'n Rights Softball Game will be played at noon on Monday at Oscar Huber Memorial Ballpark in Madrid.
The Memorial Day contest will pit the Mountain Riff-Raff against the host Madrid Maulers. It will be the first time the two adult men's squads have met, according to Riff-Raff catcher Bob Gore.
Rafter G Quarter Horses will provide a mounted color guard to start the festivities. Local entertainer Gene Corbin will announce.
Spectators are urged to bring lots of cold drinks and sunscreen. Admission is free.
For information, contact Gore at 281-0664.

Boys Hoops Camp Around the Bend The Pinto Basketball Camp of Champs for Boys will be held June 16-19 at the Moriarty High School All-Sports Practice Facility, according to a news release from the school's varsity boys coach, Frank Gonzalez.
The camp, for children in grades 1-8, will run from 8 to 11 a.m. each day. Cost for each participant is $50, and preregistration is encouraged.
Emphasis is basic skills instruction. Campers must have tennis/basketball shoes, T-shirt, and, if possible, their own basketball.
For information, contact Gonzalez at 832-5996, 832-5951 or frank.gonzalez@moriarty.k12.nm.us.>
