Telegraph Staff Reports
          Estancia Finds New Hoops Coach
Estancia High hired Robert McCaskill last week as its new boys basketball coach, Dusty Giles, the school's athletic coordinator, announced Monday.
McCaskill, 34, was the athletic director of the Boys and Girls Club in Farmington for three years before taking his new job. McCaskill also was a 6-foot-8 center for the Eastern New Mexico University men's basketball team from 2000-02, and he was a Greyhound assistant coach from 2002-04, he said during a telephone interview on Wednesday.
"It was a good opportunity for me," McCaskill said. "I've always done things (along his career path) in an alternative way, like with the Boys and Girls Club. It taught me a lot, but it was different from most of my player peers who went right into college coaching."
        Pintos Will Host Eight-Team Tourney
The Moriarty High boys soccer team, guided by first-year coach Michael Berroteran, will host its own tournament to open the 2008 season.
The Pintos — they have two seniors, Michael Satches and Aaron Jones — play Española Valley in the eight-team tourney's first round. The game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. Friday at the school's soccer fields.
The Pintos, if they are victorious on Friday, will play the Ruidoso-Bernalillo winner on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. If Moriarty falls in the first round, they will meet the loser of the Warriors-Spartans matchup on Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
The title game is set for Saturday at 3 p.m. Other games on Saturday include: third-place, 3 p.m.; and fifth- and seventh-place, 1 p.m.
        Community Center Hosts Tourneys, 3K
The Deputy James McGrane East Mountain Celebration, to be held Sept. 5-7 at Vista Grande Community Center in Sandia Park, will feature several open-to-the-public athletic events.
The double-elimination youth basketball tournament, for 17-and-under boys and girls teams, will be conducted Sept. 5-7 at the new Fisher and Smith Memorial Gymnasium located at the community center's complex. Cost is $200 per team. Deadline is Sept. 2.
The all-ages 3-kilometer trail run/walk will be held on Sept. 7. Adult participation fee is $20 if paid by Sept. 2, $30 on race day. For youth, 15-and-under, it's $10, $20 on day of event.
The double-elimination adult (18-and-over) softball tourney, with men's, women's and coed divisions, is scheduled for Sept. 6-7. Cost is $200 per team. Deadline is Sept. 2. All teams must have current Amateur Softball Association insurance.

        Schools Seek More Football Players
If you're in the seventh, eighth or ninth grades, it's not too late to sign up and play for the Moriarty High freshman or Moriarty Middle School football teams, Pintos coach Bob Allcorn said.
Prospective players or their parents can call Allcorn at 463-3559 for information.
Youthful Players Take On Big Girls
The 8-and-under Estancia Wildcats played up big time.
The Moriarty Girls Fast-Pitch Association youth softball squad was the only team in their age group during the summer season. They opted to play against the league's 10U squads rather than drop to T-ball.
The team — six third-graders, three second-graders, three first-graders and a kindergartner — went from a 40-miles-per-hour pitching machine to coach pitch to girl pitch, all in one year.
The feisty Wildcats were: Trinity Branch, Savanna Chavez, Victoria Gonzales, Rebecca Gray, Kiahna Helsley, Bailey Hammond, Taylor Hammond, Nne-Ka Kight, Marissa Luna, Payton Paul, Taylor Smythe, Mary Strand and Aubri Wrye.
Despite the 'Cats' age, they wound up with a record of 4-11. Estancia led 10-8 in the middle of the third inning against Moriarty's Whitaker Electric Stars, the eventual 10U champions, during the MGFPA playoffs, Estancia coach Denise Smythe noted in a news release.
        Monarchs Looking For Soccer Help
Manzano High continues to seek assistant coaches for its boys soccer program, according to a news release from Bob Kelly, the school's athletic director.
For information, call Manzano boys coach Tristan Lloyd via the AD's office at 559-2253.
Bean Fiesta Run Set for Oct. 11
The 2008 Bean Fiesta Run will be held Oct. 11 at 8 a.m. with the start and finish lines at the Moriarty High track, according to a news release from Colleen Burns, the event coordinator.
Early registration, paid before Oct. 11, is $20 for the 5-kilometer and 10K runs. On race day, it will cost $25.
The 1-mile fun run/walk fee is $10 before race day and $15 on Oct. 11.
The event is for children, adults and seniors with male and female divisions generally divided in 10-year increments.
Seniors into their 80s have been regulars at the event and run the fiesta's 5K and 10K races every year. Burns also is hoping to attract more elementary and middle-school kids this year.
An eclectic group of prizes, which usually reflect Moriarty's agricultural roots, are awarded. For information or to obtain a registration form, contact Burns at 384-5039 or e-mail her at lcnobull@msn.com.
        Purchase Pinto Passes at School
Moriarty High season and school-year athletic-event passes are on sale now at the school's athletic office, according to a news release from the Pintos' athletic director, Joe Butler.
A fall-season pass is $20 for adults, $15 for students.
A pass for the entire 2008-09 school year costs $50 for adults and $35 for students to see all regular-season home games during all three seasons. Passes are good for regular-season games only. They are not valid for tournament and district or state playoff games.
        For information, call 832-5951.
PAC Booster Club Looks for Support
The Pinto Athletic Club, in a renewed effort to raise community spirit for Moriarty High athletics, is seeking new members.
The 2007-08 PAC officers include Kathleen Sena (president), Colleen Chavez (vice president) and Cheryl Moore (secretary).
Parents of athletes are particularly encouraged to participate. For information, call the school's athletic department at 832-5947.
        Da-Bears Looking For New Members
Da-Bears, Estancia High's revived athletic booster club, is looking for new members and sponsors.
The club's board includes Nick Sedillo (president), Angie Coburn (vice president), Lorena Coburn (treasurer), Janice Barela (secretary), Samuel Chavez and Tracy Sedillo.
For information, call Nick Sedillo at 384-4043.
