      Bears Hoops Coach Goes Home
Mike Trujillo, who coached the Estancia High boys basketball team for three years and simultaneously the girls team for two, resigned at the end of the 2007-08 school year. He is now the head boys coach at Clayton, his prep alma mater, Trujillo said in a recent telephone interview.
    The Bears boys, who advanced to the state Class 2A semifinals in 2006, are the reigning District 8-2A champions. They were 24-4 in 2007-08 and were upset in the Class 2A state tournament's first round.
    The Estancia girls were 18-12 overall and were the district runners-up last season. The Lady Bears also fell in the state tourney's first round.
    Before his stint at Estancia, Trujillo was the girls basketball coach at Moriarty High.
    The EHS boys hoops position is listed as an opening under the “classified” button on the home page of the New Mexico Activities Association's Web site at www.nmact.org. For information, call Estancia athletics director Mike Draper at 384-2002, the NMAA Web site entry states.
   
    Spring Sports Teams Wrap It Up
The final tally is done. Here is the complete listing of how all the local high school teams fared during the spring 2008 season.
    East Mountain
    Baseball — 14-10, 0-6 in District 5-2A. Did not qualify for state.
    Golf, Boys — Team did not qualify for state. No individuals qualified for state.
    Golf, Girls — Did not field full team. No individuals qualified for state.
    Softball — 19-5, 4-2 in District 2/1A-2A. District runner-up. Placed fourth at double-elimination Class 1A-2A state tournament.
    Track and Field, Boys — Did not score at state.
    Track and Field, Girls — Did not score at state.
    Estancia
    Baseball — 15-4, 6-0 in District 5-2A. District champion. Advanced to Class 2A state tournament semifinals.
    Softball — 6-14, 2-4 in District 2/1A-2A. Did not qualify for state.
    Track and Field, Boys — District 8-2A champion. Placed eighth at Class 2A state meet. One individual gold medal.
    Track and Field, Girls — District champion. Placed fifth at state meet.
    Manzano
    Baseball — 12-16, 5-7 in District 5-5A. Lost in state Class 5A tournament first round.
    Golf, Boys — District team runner-up. Team did not qualify for state. Top player tied for 33rd at state.
    Golf, Girls — Did not field full team. Top player won district individual title; tied for 24th at state.
    Softball — 11-17, 9-3. District runner-up. Lost in first round of losers' bracket at double-elimination state tournament.
    Tennis, Boys — 3-8, 1-2. Team did not advance to state tournament. No individuals qualified for state.
    Tennis, Girls — 5-7, 2-1. Runner-up in district. Lost in first round at state team tournament. One player advanced to state individual tourney; lost in first round of singles competition.
    Track and Field, Boys — Tied for 16th at state meet.
    Track and Field, Girls — Placed eighth at state. One individual gold medal.

    Pinto Basketball Camp Canceled
The Pinto Basketball Camp of Champs for Boys that was scheduled to start Monday has been canceled, according to a news release from the school's varsity boys coach, Frank Gonzalez.
    No further information was given on the cancelation.

    Girls Hoops Camp Starts Monday
Moriarty High's girls basketball camp for girls in grades 1-6 at the school's All-Sports Practice Facility begins Monday and continues through June 19, 10 a.m. to noon each day.
    Emphasis is on learning basic skills. Cost is $30 each.

    Moriarty Needs Baseball Coach
Moriarty High School is looking for a new baseball coach, according to a news release from the school's athletics director, Joe Butler.
    Pintos coach Michael Chavez resigned at the end of the 2008 season. He said he is moving to Texas to take a new job.
    Moriarty was 19-10 overall, 10-5 in District 5-4A this past spring. The Pintos, who were the state runners-up in 2007, advanced to the state quarterfinals this year.
    Application deadline for the vacant position is July 25. Call 832-5947 for information.
   
    Middle School Coaches Sought
Moriarty Middle School needs three football coaches, Moriarty High coach Bob Allcorn said.

    AYSO Registration Set for June 28
The East Mountain boys and girls league of the American Youth Soccer Organization will hold a registration session for the fall 2008 season on June 28 at Los Vecinos Community Center in Tijeras, according to a news release from the local entity's spokesman, Todd Alam.
    The registration period will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For information, see the organization's Web site at

    Volleyball Camp Slated for August
Moriarty High will hold its annual summer volleyball camp, for girls in grades 7-12, at the Pintos' All-Sports Practice Facility on Aug. 4-7 from 1-4 p.m. each day, according to a news release from the school's athletics department.
    The fee for participation is $70. Emphasis is on skills instruction and playing.
