Pintos, Monarchs Take 4th at District

By Harold Smith
Mountain View Telegraph
The Moriarty High boys and girls track and field teams both took fourth place at the District 5-4A Championships held Friday and Saturday in Belen.
The Pintos boys scored 53 points while Albuquerque Academy was first with 182. The Moriarty girls garnered 55 points, and St. Pius won with 130.85.
The Moriarty boys earned four gold medals at the eight-team meet. Taylor Allcorn won the triple jump (44 feet, 7 inches) and long jump (21-9), Jason Tidwell was the victor in the 300-meter hurdles (41.30 seconds), and the Pintos also crossed the finish line in first place in the 800 relay (1 minute, 33.78 seconds).
The Moriarty girls got their sole gold from Jayci Manning, who was the long-jump winner (17-5).
That sets the stage for this weekend's state Class 4A championships at the University of New Mexico's track stadium on Friday and Saturday.
“It's going to be tough (for the boys and the girls) to get in the top five,” Pintos coach Joe Bailey said. “But of the ones that are going, there are several who have a good chance to place (score via a top-six position).”
Based on figures derived from the pre-meet seedings, the statistical guess is the Moriarty boys could take eighth place at state with 17 points. The Lady Pintos are a projected ninth with 20.
Los Alamos, with a predicted 111 points, is the favorite in the boys competition. Albuquerque Academy's seedings add up to 81 points for a possible state girls title.
“We just haven't been able to run the same athletes from week to week due to injuries and other commitments,” Bailey said of his boys team. “But Taylor Allcorn (the reigning state champion in the triple) is No. 1 in the triple jump and No. 2 in the long jump. Jason Tidwell is seventh in the 300 hurdles, but I expect him to score.”
The Moriarty girls are in the midst of a rebuilding year.
“We lost so much from last year,” the coach said.
Manning is the second seed in the 200 dash and long jump. Kendra Nixon is No. 6 in the 100 hurdles.
Moriarty High's graduation ceremony, scheduled for Saturday, conflicts with the state track meet.
“I have two daughters graduating on Saturday, one from UNM and one from Moriarty,” Bailey said. “But I still plan to make the state track meet. I will support our seniors and their parents in whatever decision they make (in regards to which event they will participate).”

       Manzano
The Monarchs boys and girls, respectively with 69˝ and 68˝ points, both placed fourth at the District 5-5A Championships held May 8 and Saturday in Los Lunas. Eldorado was the girls' winner with 169˝ points, and the Highland boys took first with 141˝.
Sandia Park's Chris Quintana got the silver medal in the boys 800 run (2:03.19).
The Manzano girls, on the coattails of Monquisha Coleman, could score 14 points at the Class 5A state meet, per the pre-meet seedings. That would put them in a tie for ninth with Sandia High.
The Monarchs boys will find it difficult to score at state. Manzano's best chance to get a point will be in the open 400 in which Tijeras' Matt Stoltzfus is the seventh seed.
