Tijeras' Ashlee Jones, New Mexico's 2006 Class 5A girls prep golf champion, is transferring to Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, Texas, for the 2008-09 school year, the 2007 Manzano High graduate said in a telephone interview on Wednesday.
The new Pioneer earned three straight District 5-4A individual titles as a Lady Monarch.
"We're excited that she will be playing for us," said Tom Harp, Wayland's eighth-year golf coach. "She's a wonderful young lady, and she has lots of talent."
Jones, who red-shirted as a freshman golfer at the University of Nevada in Reno, said she will receive a full-ride scholarship, including room and board, to play for her new team.
The Wayland Baptist women's golf team is in its first year of existence.
"But that's good," said Jones, a mass communications major. "We can start our own tradition."
Jones joins her former Manzano teammate, Albuquerquean Zane Crook, at Wayland. Crook will be in his second year with the Pioneer men.
"It's real exciting," Jones said. "It'll be like in high school. We're still best friends." MHS Selling Sports Passes

Richard Mondragon wrapped up his third year as an umpire for the Moriarty Baseball League and Moriarty Girls Fast-Pitch Association, both youth sports organizations, during the MGFPA's championship game day at the city's sports complex on Aug. 2.
"The big difference between the girls' softball games and the boys' is the girls have to get back in the (pitcher's) circle, instead of them trying to get the out," Mondragon said. "They can't advance after the pitcher gets back in the circle. Other than that, it's the same game."
Mondragon teaches shop at Edgewood Middle School, and he has been the Eagles' athletic coordinator. He also taught drafting at the high school last year.
Mondragon is well-known for his effervescent presence at the sports complex. He often jokes with the parents, the kids and the coaches during games.
The ump's older daughters, Amy and Alyssa, are Lady Pinto athletes. His youngest, Kristina, is a third-grader-to-be.
"Before I started, I thought it would be boring, but it's been fun," he said. "I know all the kids." Bean Fiesta Run Set for Oct. 11
