Heat Cools Off At State Tournament
The Moriarty Heat struck out three times and was booted out of the state American Amateur Baseball Congress 14-and-under tournament at Santa Fe's Fort Marcy Park.
The Española Trojans defeated Moriarty 11-7 in a first-round game on Monday. The Las Vegas (N.M.) Kryptonite subsequently beat the Heat 11-4 in the losers' bracket of the Sandy Koufax-division competition on Tuesday.
Then in a four-inning, rain-shortened consolation game, the Las Cruces Yankees relegated Moriarty to the cellar of the eight-team field with an 8-2 win, also on Tuesday.
“I was very disappointed,” Heat coach Joel Shipman said. “I was still proud of them, but they could have played better.”
The Moriarty squad didn't receive any monetary support from AABC for its trip to Santa Fe.
“We usually get a little bit of funding,” Shipman said. “I don't know what was up this year. They just said there wasn't any available.”
    EMLL All-Stars Combine Forces
Atrisco Valley Little League — augmented by one East Mountain Little League player, Chloe Nance — will play in the state majors-division (11- and 12-year-old) all-star softball tournament at Copper Little League's fields in Bayard, according to a news release from District 5 secretary Antoinette Sabedra.
Atrisco will face the District 8 titlist in a first-round game on Friday at 5:30 p.m. Atrisco, which fell 12-1 to Thunderbird Little League in the District 5 title game at Vista Grande Community Center on June 28, advanced as its district's runner-up.
The state competition will continue through at least July 18.
The joint Zia/East Mountain Little League juniors-division (13-14) all-star team also qualified for its state tournament. The junior tourney begins July 18 at Alameda Little League's fields in Albuquerque, Zia manager Claudette Chavez said.
Zia/East Mountain was the District 5 runner-up after losing 19-6 to Thunderbird in the district championship game at Vista Grande on July 2.
Atrisco defeated Thunderbird 12-0 in the District 5 minors-division (9-10) championships at Vista Grande on Friday.

Pee Wee Clubs Bound for State
Three Moriarty Baseball League teams — Estancia's Diamondbacks and Bears and the league-champion Moriarty Express— will play in the state American Amateur Baseball Congress 12-and-under, Pee Wee Reese-division tournament in Las Cruces, MBL President Rhett Butler said.
Tourney play begins today and will continue through at least Saturday.
The Estancia Bears 9U team qualified for the AABC Jackie Robinson-division World Series in Tulsa, Okla. That tournament begins Tuesday and will run through July 20.

Local League Won Way Back in 1994
In the past four summer all-star seasons, there was much debate about whether this game or that was the first East Mountain Little League postseason baseball victory in the local organization's history.
Well, come to find out, none of them were.
According to an East Mountain Telegraph published in the summer of 1994, an EMLL all-star team coached by Ty Martello won two district all-star games that year.
Martello, in an e-mail written following the conclusion of the 2007 season, said it was his 11- and 12-year-old majors-division players that got the first EMLL all-star victory.
“After five years, East Mountain has finally won its first postseason tournament game ever!” a copy of the old Telegraph stated.
The headline read: “EMLL All-Star Team Wins 2 Out of 4”.
The East Mountain players included Mackie Lichtel, Mike Augustyniak, Daniel Saenz, Nick Tarasenko, Joe Neuman, Justin Tom, Matt Wright, Ian Toner, Chris Loucks, Erin O'Neil and Paul Martello.
