Telegraph Staff Reports
Lady Bears Hoops Coach Is Named
Ernest Renteria has been hired as the new Estancia High girls basketball coach, EHS athletic coordinator Dusty Giles announced Monday.
The Lady Bears were 18-12, 5-1 in District 8-2A in 2007-08 under former coach Mike Trujillo, who resigned. Estancia was the district runner-up.
Renteria, who was Trujillo's assistant for three years, coached the Mountainair six-man football team to four straight state titles from 1989 to '92. He said he started his coaching career in Lordsburg, where he was the boys basketball coach and track and field coach.
Renteria is the husband of Carolyn Allen-Renteria, the superintendent of Estancia's school district.

       Successful Coach Faces New Foe
Kim Bell, who coached the Moriarty High volleyball team to the state Class 4A title in 2007, readily doffed her cap at the Lady Pintos' volleyball camp on Monday to reveal her bald head.
Though Bell has retained her positive attitude, the reason for her closely cropped hairdo is a serious one. She said she was diagnosed with breast cancer in March and underwent her final chemotherapy treatment July 31.
Bell, who will be in her seventh year at Moriarty, said she fully intends to guide her spikers during the fall season though she still feels ill occasionally. The Pintos' first regular-season matches will be at the West Texas Champions Tournament in El Paso on Aug. 29-30.

Junior Rodeo On Tap at County Fair
The Torrance County Fair Junior Rodeo will be held Saturday at the fairgrounds in Estancia, according to Leslie Chavez, the event's statistical guru of the crow's nest.
Entrant registration is from 7 to 9 a.m. Competition begins at 10 a.m.

Rain Floods Gym At Manzano High
Rainwater flooded the Manzano High gymnasium, weightlifting room and wrestling room over the weekend, according to the Albuquerque Journal.
When workers came in Monday, they found 2 inches of water in the hallways. About half the wood court in the main gym will have to be replaced, with total damages so far estimated at $150,000 to $200,000.

       Parents Must Attend Meeting
Moriarty High will hold a meeting on Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. at John B. Salvo Gym for all parents whose sons or daughters will participate in the school's fall season athletic programs.
For the first time, the New Mexico Activities Association has decreed that it is mandatory for athletes' parents or guardians to attend this meeting. NMAA, District 5-4A and program rules will be covered. Parents must sign an attendance roster upon arrival in the gym lobby.
Meetings for winter and spring programs will be held on later dates. However, parents of winter and spring athletes may fulfill the requirement by attending the Aug. 19 meeting.
For information, contact the athletic office at 832-5951.

The Moriarty High girls basketball team was hot this summer.
The Lady Pintos, according to a news release from coach Joe Bailey, won three of the four tournaments the team competed in during the summer break. They had an overall record of 25-3.
Moriarty went 6-0 at its own prep team camp at John B. Salvo Gym on June 6-7 with victories over Santa Fe St. Michael's, Valley, Los Alamos, Rio Rancho, Deming and Del Norte.
The Pintos beat Fort Collins (Colo.) Fossil Ridge in the finals of the Gold Crown Team Camp, which ran from June 14-16, in Lakewood, Colo. They knocked off Albuquerque Academy in the semifinals.
Moriarty then proceeded to take second place at the New Mexico State University Team Camp, held June 20-22 in Las Cruces. The Pintos fell in overtime to Las Cruces Mayfield in the title game after defeating Animas in the semifinals.
On June 26-28, Moriarty beat Phoenix Greenway in the championship game and was undefeated at the Desert Hoops Shootout in Glendale, Ariz.
The Pintos' summertime roster included seniors Megan Bond, Desireé Godinez, Alex Lehocky, Amy Mondragon, Jordan Russell and Brandi and Kristin Valencia; juniors Sydney Cravens, Angel Laue, Cynthia Lyons, Jessie Rowe and Rheanna Smith; and sophomore Jasmine Quintana.
