Young Shines At Youth NRA Event Sandia Park's Canyon Young won the sub-junior (11-and-under coed) division of the New Mexico Youth Hunter Education Challenge at the National Rifle Association's Whittington Center in Raton.
The three-day event was held this past weekend and was sponsored by the NRA, 4H, the New Mexico Shooting Sports Association and state Game and Fish, said Larry Foster, NMYHEC's 18-year director.
Young, who recently graduated from San Antonito Elementary and is a 5-foot-6, 150-pound Roosevelt Middle School rising sixth-grader, was in the top five in six of the competition's eight categories. He took first place in shotgun/clay shooting, wildlife identification and the hunter responsibility exam.
“Canyon did very well for his first time,” Foster said. “He's a smart kid.”
Hartshorn Makes 5-5A First Team Manzano High first-baseman Russell Hartshorn, who recently graduated, was named to the 2008 all-District 5-5A first-team baseball squad, as announced in a news release from district coordinator Bob Kelly.
Hartshorn is a resident of the Juan Tomas area.
Other selected Monarchs were Kelly Fillinger (first-team utility player) and Nick Nelsen (second-team outfielder).
Hartshorn said he is playing summer ball with his club team, the Albuquerque Bombers. He also will compete in the Class 4A-5A all-star series at Las Cruces' Apodaca Park on June 13-14.
Lady Monarchs Reel in the Honors Five Manzano High softball players made the 2008 all-District 5-5A first-team list.
The honored Lady Monarchs included shortstop Amity Livingston, pitcher Evangeline Samora, infielder Jennifer Holyfield and catcher Courtney Leslie, according to a news release from district coordinator Bob Kelly.

All-Star Game Likely To Stay Put The state's Eight-Man East-West All-Star Football Game will probably remain in Ruidoso, Leonard Velasquez, president of the New Mexico Eight-Man Football Coaches Association, said Saturday after this year's postseason contest.
“The businesses in Ruidoso take care of us,” Velasquez said. “We put the players up in condos instead of motels, and the East players room with the West players.”
The West, with five Mountainair players on its roster, beat the East 38-16 on Saturday.
“We invited six-man to join us this year, but they wanted to be separate,” Velasquez said. “Six-man (all-star game) now is basically a senior bowl, not an all-star game. If you're a senior, you get to go.”
Monarchs 3-3 At The N.M. Games The Manzano High baseball team, sans its recent graduates, went 3-3 in the prep division of the New Mexico Games baseball tournament played at the Monarchs' field on May 29 through Sunday.

“We have a lot of work to do,” he said.
