      Moriarty Extends Chevy Fundraiser
The Moriarty High athletic department's Chevy Truck Raffle Fundraiser has been extended. The drawing will now be held on May 20 at 7 p.m. at John B. Salvo Gym.
According to a news release from Moriarty athletic director Joe Butler, the goal of the fundraising effort is to garner $50,000 to support the school's athletic department operating budget for the 2008-09 school year. Raffle tickets, at a cost of $10 each — $80,000 gross, $50,000 net after expenses — will be on sale until the drawing.
Butler said Tuesday that the raffle is going well with $30,000 worth of tickets having been sold. That will cover the underlying cost of the event so, he said, “The rest will be for the kids.”
The first-place prize will be a 2008 Chevy Colorado, four-wheel-drive club-cab pickup, which was provided at cost by Tillery Chevrolet in Moriarty. Other prizes include a four-wheel all-terrain vehicle, $2,000 in furniture, and two 42-inch flat-screen TVs.

       Teen Chosen For Exclusive Camp
An East Mountains youth is in Salt Lake City this week to take part in the USA Hockey Mountain District Player Development Camp.
John Posler, 13, from Cedar Crest was chosen to represent New Mexico at the exclusive camp. Posler is a goalie with his Bantam AA team, the Icebreakers.
The Rocky Mountain District Player Development Camp is a selection and evaluation camp for the top 80 players in each age group from all the district, which includes Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico.
This select group will be evaluated during camp by a staff of certified amateur, college and professional ice hockey coaches.
Based upon the evaluation, the top 18 players in each age group will be selected to advance to the USA Hockey National Festivals held this summer.
       Moriarty's Twins In 4A All-State Team
Moriarty High's Kristin and Brandi Valencia, 5-foot-9 juniors, were recently named to the New Mexico High School Coaches Association Class 4A girls basketball all-state first team.
The twin sisters were the only all-state selections, boy or girl including second team, from the area's five local high schools. The coaches' association did not make honorable-mention picks.
