Estancia Making Play for 3rd Title
By Harold Smith /
Mountain View Telegraph
The Estancia High baseball team, the two-time defending Class 2A state champion Bears, wrapped up the regular season with a decisive victory over District 5-2A rival Santa Rosa on Tuesday.
Estancia (14-3, 6-0) swept its district schedule for the 5-2A crown with a 19-10 barnburner of a win over the Lions at the Bears' field.
“We started the game with Isaiah Ortiz (on the mound),” Estancia coach Mike Cabber said. “They (his players) were hitting the ball well. We had a lot of base hits. Lawrence Chavez had three base hits. (Clayton) Gardner hit a home run over the fence and had two or three base hits. Stefan Newsom had three hits. They all hit the ball hard. They were hitting from the beginning of the game.”
Ortiz lasted for 3â…” innings. Gardner relieved him and finished the game.
“They didn't score on Clayton,” Cabber said. “But when you let the other team get 10 runs, you have to be able to hit the ball and score some runs to overcome that. And we were able to do that.”
Estancia, which only has 17 games under its belt as compared to Moriarty and East Mountain with 23, does not have any more regular-season games scheduled before it will play in the state tournament in Albuquerque on May 12-14. The Bears, by virtue of winning their district, received a bye past the first round of the 2A state tournament, which is set to be played Sunday and Monday in a regional format, Cabber said.
“We're trying to get another game, trying to get a fill-in game,” the coach said. “If not, we'll have to get after it in practice. It's definitely going to be a challenge to stay sharp. But we're up for it.”

The Lady Bears (5-12, 1-4) wrapped up District 2/1A-2A play with a 15-0 loss to district champion Española McCurdy in Rio Arriba County on Tuesday.
Estancia's final game against Jemez Valley, also a district opponent, was to be played on April 22, but that game was postponed. Bears coach Michael Dominguez said Tuesday that he had not received word yet on when the game versus the Warriors would be reset.
Estancia does have three nondistrict games remaining in the regular season, including a home game against Dexter today at 3 p.m.
However, some members of Dominguez's team, with the state softball playoffs not in the cards, are moving their attentions to the EHS track and field team.
“In particular, Robin Jones,” Dominguez said. “She's been pretty key in track. She's on some relays. She has a different focus now, and the girls track team has been so shorthanded.”
East Mountain baseball
The Timberwolves concluded their District 5-2A schedule with 24-5 and 22-16 doubleheader losses against Santa Rosa at East Mountain's home field at Vista Grande Community Center on Friday.
“They (the Lions) hit the ball really well,” EMHS coach David Naylor said. “In the second game, we played considerably better. At one point, it was 16-14. Then, they changed out their two pitchers and put the other one back in, the first-game winner, and we stopped hitting. But Jimmy Grieco hit three home runs against Santa Rosa.”
Though the T'Wolves, who were 9-11 last year, have a much-improved overall record of 14-7, it doesn't seem to soften the blow of yet another 0-6 district finish.
“I thought we would have fared a little better than we did,” Naylor said. “We're in the toughest district around. If we were in District 6, we definitely would've gone to state. But I guess that's the way the cookie crumbles.”
Still, East Mountain should be looking forward to next year.
“The only one to speak of that I'm losing is (senior) Andrew Ganger (a catcher),” Naylor said.
The Timberwolves played a nondistrict doubleheader late Wednesday at Gallup Catholic. They wrap up 2007 against the Hope Christian junior varsity at the Heights Community Center today at 4 p.m.
EMHS softball
The Lady Timberwolves (15-3) defeated the Sandia Prep JV 14-1 and 25-1 in a twin bill at the Sundevils' facility on April 24.
“We're still working very hard,” East Mountain coach Denise Whipple said. “Our last (District 2/1A-2A) game against McCurdy (a 22-3 loss on April 22) was a wake-up call. I don't know what the deal was. We had silly, silly errors. But as coaches, we sat the girls down and said, ‘Hey, we're going to state. We need to pick it up.' ”
The T'Wolves' away game at Mora, originally scheduled for April 12 and then moved to Saturday, was canceled by the Rangers, Whipple said. East Mountain played a nondistrict doubleheader at Gallup Catholic late Wednesday.
The Timberwolves' last regular-season games, a nondistrict doubleheader, will be played at Cuba today at 3 and 5 p.m.
“In practice, we're giving it 125 percent,” Whipple said. “When we played Sandia Prep — given that it was their JV — they (her girls) looked sharp. They looked like a team, and they didn't have any errors.”
