Editorial: A Little Effort Can Help Kids in School



      The summer may be a little more than half over, but you can tell its almost time for school to start.
    Retailers have their back-to-school items ready to go and the state's Tax Free Holiday is this weekend.
    But to some families, getting those basic items could be difficult.
    Groups throughout the East Mountains and Estancia Valley, though, are doing their part to make sure students have pencils and paper come the start of school. The East Mountain Friends for Families is holding fundraising parties and set out collection boxes. The Torrance County Project Office in Estancia has its annual Back-To-School campaign, and Bethel Community Storehouse in Moriarty is asking for donations as well.
    These are just three examples of community groups working to make sure that a child's success in school doesn't come down to whether a child has supplies or not. There are many others who also help and deserve the thanks of the community.
    For those of us who have it a little bit better than others, it takes only a little effort to make a difference.
    So when you are buying your school supplies this weekend, be sure to remember those kids whose parents may not be able to do the same.
