There's Abuse At
Council Meetings
AFTER OBSERVING what I believe to be verbal abuse at several of our Edgewood Council Meetings, I came home after the last meeting, April 2, 2008, and found the following description:
"Emotional abuse is words or deeds that disempower others, harm their spirit, destroy their reputation, infringe on their dignity, compromise their integrity, or pollute the climate of an organization. Abuse is designed to control and subjugate another person through fear, humiliation, and verbal put downs."
This is from "Work Place Abuse" by Dr. Tom Heuerman, Ph.D. in "Self Help Magazine" located on the Internet at www.selfhelpmagazine.com.

We Should Drive
Slower on N.M. 14
I THINK WE NEED TO SLOW DOWN TRAFFIC on N.M. 14 for three main reasons: Too many people get hit and/or killed yearly; too many pets and animals are killed monthly; and drivers in Cedar Crest usually drive 5-10 mph faster than the posted speed limit anyway (causing unnecessary accidents.)
According to Chevron Gas Station employees in 2006, about one person gets killed (on average) per year. This is mostly due to a high traffic volume and popularity of the area (to walk and/or use the bike path). There are several businesses in the area that locals enjoy where it's easy for a car to accidentally swerve and jump the curb. Even one death per year, in my opinion, is still too many.
Another reason North 14 traffic needs to slow down is due to the amount of pets and animals that are killed monthly. This is according to Cheveron gas station employees as well. We have lost two pets, ourselves, from getting hit by hit-and-runs on North 14 with the last few years. The animals get out, stray to the road, and end up getting hit trying to cross and/or run along the side of the busy road.
A third reason to slow down traffic on North 14 is because of the speeders, themselves. Most of the traffic in the East Mountain, like other areas, averages 5-10 mph over the speed limit. Right now the speed limit is 50 mph and traffic usually cruise by at 60 mph. If we want to slow down traffic to actually go 50 mph, a 40 mph limit should be posted. Part of the reason for having a 50 mph limit, currently, is to attract prospective home buyers to this area with a "downtown is only 20 minutes away" slogan. Cedar Crest has grown enough and doesn't need this "attraction device" anymore.
In conclusion, there are many, many reasons to lower the speed limit on North 14. However, I feel the three main reasons or issues deal with human fatalities, animal and pet fatalities, and careless routines of speeders themselves. Wouldn't it be better if there were no human or pet fatalities? I implore the people of Tijeras, Cedar Crest and Sandia park to unite and speak up about making a small change in speed limit that could save lives in a big way.
