Editorial: Truckers Set Example In Fight Against DWI

By

Anyone who drives on Interstate 40 knows the 18-wheelers can be intimidating.
On Sunday night, however, three big rig drivers used that intimidation to corner a suspected drunken driver and get him off the road.
Several truck drivers had seen someone in a car driving erratically on eastbound I-40 at Sedillo Hill. Three of the truckers boxed the car in, but the driver of the car looked like he was brandishing a weapon and the truckers wisely called the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department.
Deputies took over and the truckers went about their business of delivering goods across the country.
The incident shows what can happen when regular people are active in the fight against drunken driving. In 2006, the state started its Drunk Busters Hotline, where drivers can call in suspected drunken drivers. During March, the hot line received 2,037 calls, which resulted in 13 arrests.
The state could go a step further and place more road signs advertising the hot line number. That way, visitors to our state will know where to call if they suspect someone driving drunk.
The Drunk Busters Hotline is toll free at (877) DWI-HALT and #DWI from cell phones.
