Getting a new transportation department up and running wasn't an easy thing for the Moriarty-Edgewood School District to do.
When Plant School Transportation backed out of its contract with the school district to provide school busing to the district's 3,500 students, the district didn't wring its hands — it got to work.
By the time school started Aug. 20, the district had all 36 of its routes running and enough drivers to guide the buses. The changeover wasn't without bumps, but the district — including Ernie Sandoval, the district transportation supervisor, Superintendent Karen Couch and the Moriarty-Edgewood Board of Education — should be commended for quick action.
Thanks also should be given to the state Public Education Department, which was instrumental in getting new buses delivered to Moriarty on time. It should also be noted that several New Mexico school districts called Moriarty to offer help with buses, most notable among them was the Farmington School District, which has loaned the Moriarty-Edgewood district a handful of buses and even went so far as to change the lettering on the side for their new use.
While it was unfortunate Plant School Transportation bowed out, the leaders of the Moriarty-Edgewood School District stepped forward to make lemonade out of those lemons.
