Discuss Drinking Before the Prom
The time of year is upon us when love is in the air and young people get dressed up for prom.
But before you send your kids out dressed in tuxedos and expensive gowns, keep this in mind — nearly 30 percent of them have taken a drink of alcohol and more than 10 percent have admitted to driving after drinking.
The numbers come from a 2005 Youth Risk and Resiliency Survey of Torrance County youths.
It is natural for those going to prom to want to have a good time, but it is up to parents to make sure they know that a good time doesn’t need alcohol. There is the great possibility that a good time could turn tragic with bad decisions.
Both the Moriarty and Estancia high schools will be holding their proms in Albuquerque, where school officials will be on hand to make sure that alcohol doesn’t make an appearance. However, they can’t monitor behavior before and after the big dance.
The month of April was declared Alcohol Awareness Month by the Torrance County Commission, but it will take the work of all of us to assure prom season will be a safe one.
