We Should Have Listened to Carter
I'VE BEEN READING WITH GREAT INTEREST THE FEUD between Mr. Mihhelich and Mr. Brooks, regarding nuclear vs. wind.
Jimmy Carter started an alternative energy program during his presidency. He even put solar panels on the White House roof. Jimmy was a visionary. He saw the energy crises looming in the future. For 50 years this nation has been on a binge, using up our natural resources like their was no tomorrow. President Carter tried to tell the American people they would have curtail their affluent lifestyle or face a grim future. It made him very unpopular. Carter said we need to get rid of the gas guzzlers and tighten our belts. Ronnie said we can keep our gas guzzlers and our lifestyle. People said we like Ronnie, and Carter lost his bid for re-election.
When Ronald Reagan took office, he scrapped Carter's alternative energy program and took the solar panels off the White House roof. Put the country back on an oil economy and the binge continued. If people would have taken Carter seriously we would not be in this mess today. Instead, he was criticized and ridiculed.
I think using nuclear energy as an alternative source to replace oil gas and coal is a terrible idea. We're trading one source of pollution for another. We don't know what to do with the nuclear waste we have now. George Bush's budget calls for giving more funding for nuclear and coal while cutting funding for alternative energy. So it has to be bad idea — George never did anything right in his entire life. Furthermore, he is increasing highway funding and cutting funding for mass transportation.
        We're going backward.
The closest I want to be to a nuclear reactor is that big red one in the sky. Here's energy we should be utilizing and concentrating our efforts on.
I agree with Mr. Brooks that we should not get panicky about global warming. Why? We're too late. We think we can solve everything with technology. Well, we have outsmarted ourselves. With the warming of the oceans the more the ice will melt creating more water which will further warm the planet which will thaw the permafrost emitting more CO2 and methane gas. Temperatures will increase exponentially. The Earth will develop a fever and shrug us off like a virus. Afterward, the Earth will recover and heal itself. The great monuments and accomplishment of mankind will eventually disappear and nothing will remain to show that man ever inhabited the planet.
