Editorial: Remember Commuters

The thousands of Estancia Valley and East Mountains residents who hop in their cars each weekday to go to work in Albuquerque are feeling the pinch of gas prices inching past $4 a gallon.
But about 40 commuters each day have discovered the state Department of Transportation's Park and Ride is a good way to save on fuel and the aggravation of commuting.
When the Park and Ride started last year, about 26 riders took to the bus, but since prices have steadily increased, so has ridership. And a new bus running from Tijeras to Kirtland Air Force Base started in May has proved to be popular.
It almost makes one think that regular bus service might not be too far behind. Although DOT hasn't stated whether bus service might be possible in the future, filling up the Park and Ride vehicles every day could show there is the desire for regular bus stops.
At this point, 40 riders a day doesn't show a great need, but anything is possible with enough vocal support.
The governor has put his eggs in the Rail Runner basket. And while it isn't feasible to run a train from Albuquerque to Moriarty, perhaps the governor and Legislature might look at ways to better serve the thousands of commuters making the trek through Tijeras Canyon every weekday.
