Editorial: Co-Op Faces Challenges

The Central New Mexico Electrical Cooperative has dropped is proposal to change one of its time-of-use rates that led the state Public Regulation Commission to launch an investigation.
Soon after withdrawing its proposal, the PRC dropped its investigation. While an investigation into the way the co-op had come up with the proposed rate structure was welcome, it is just as nice to see CNME realize its mistake and come up with a better plan.
The co-op now is proposing a different rate structure which, on the face, looks to be better for its members.
Whether this change came about because of pressure from the public or the PRC inquiry is unknown. However, it is heartening to see this organization on which so many people rely to do the right thing.
But the work isn't done. The very survival of the Estancia Valley depends on economic development, of which the co-op is an important partner. To attract business and industry, affordable energy needs will have to be met.
With rising energy costs everywhere, it is obvious that tough times are ahead for everyone. The cooperative will have to face these challenges, but it also will have to continue to respond to its members.
