Meet the Mountain View Telegraph staff:
John Brennan, editor
John has been in the newspaper business for 14 years, starting as a reporter for the Steamboat Pilot in Steamboat Springs, Colo. He has worked as an editor in Colorado as well as Deming, N.M. He was city editor of the Journal North in Santa Fe before taking on the role of editor when the Mountain View Journal was created in 1999.
John lives in Moriarty with his wife, Julie, and their 3-year-old twins, David and Amanda. Their interests include camping, hiking, cross-country skiing and travel.
Beth Hahn, reporter
Beth Hahn is a bonafide New Texican, born in Texas but raised in New Mexico.
A 1998 graduate of Eunice High School, she attended the University of New
Mexico with every intention of becoming a teacher. Unfortunately for the
realm of education, Beth fell in love with journalism during a required
introductory course and never looked back.
She graduated with honors in 2002 and began her career at the paper she grew up reading, the Hobbs News-Sun.
Beth joined the Telegraph in November 2004 and resides in Moriarty with her
Doberman, Athena.
Harold Smith, sports reporter
Harold Smith is a native New Mexican, born in Albuquerque and raised in the
South
Valley. He graduated from Rio Grande High School and obtained a journalism
degree from the University of New Mexico, where he served as the sports
editor of UNM's campus newspaper, the Daily Lobo.
Harold then spent 21 years on active duty in the United States Marine Corps.
He was a communications officer and retired from military service in 1998.
Until he accepted his current position in April 2004, Harold spent several
years working as a full-time freelance writer for the Albuquerque Journal
sports desk.
Harold and his wife, Cathy, live in northeast Albuquerque. They have two
adult children, Gordon and Elizabeth, both married. He also has relatives
who live in Edgewood and McIntosh.
Harold enjoys covering all the sports at Estancia, Moriarty, Mountainair,
East Mountain and Manzano high schools.
Matt Gomez, reporter
It takes Matt Gomez almost two hands to count the places he's lived growing up, but he considers New Mexico his real home.
He graduated cum laude from the University of New Mexico in May 2006 with a bachelor's degree in English and a minor in journalism.
Despite commuting between Albuquerque and Moriarty every day, he feels a growing attachment to the areas he reports on and is motivated to learn the inner workings of all the East Mountains communities and beyond.
In his free time, Matt enjoys writing fiction and poetry and composing music on his computer. His most recent obsession is riding his fixed-gear bicycle around town to stay in shape and train to, perhaps one day, participate in a long-distance race.
Loretta Olson, sales
Loretta is a native New Mexican, the daughter and granddaughter of native New Mexicans. She's lived in the East Mountains area for 12 years with her husband, 18-year-old son and 14-year-old daughter.
Unfamiliar with the area when she moved out here, Loretta got into real estate, which she found to be a great way to meet new friends. She loves her job, elephants and being out in our communities, hoping her business helps your business.
Mary Safford, sales
From the great state of Nebraska, Mary moved to the equally great state of New Mexico in 1987, directly to the East Mountains, which she loves. Having worked at the East Mountain Directory for 13 years, Mary finds selling advertising a natural way to stay in contact with all her friends and neighbors.
Mary raised a 21-year-old son in the mountains, and knowing he is also a part of this community makes her feel like this is her second home. These days, you can hear her son, Ryan, on 100.3 The PEAK radio station. Her oldest son, Scott, resides in Tucson, while her middle son, Rob, is still in the Nebraska cornfields and has recently bought a home there.
Kay Anderson, classifieds
With a wealth of good stories about 10 years of life in the East Mountains, Kay Anderson loves her job, her family and her garden. She and her husband, Fred, have been married 35 years. They have two sons and, the light of Kay's life, a grandson who lives in Arizona.
Kay enjoys interacting with people and says working the classified desk keeps her busy.
