Broadband Service Expanded

By Laura Nesbitt
Mountain View Telegraph
Qwest is now offering high-speed Internet service in Estancia and Tijeras as well as certain areas of Edgewood.
Broadband service became available in Estancia on Friday and Tijeras got the service as of Aug. 28, said Gary Younger, Qwest media relations manager.
"Certain parts of Edgewood have Qwest broadband available" and some areas do not, Younger said. This is because Edgewood is "in between two different wire centers (Moriarty and Tijeras)."
Younger said "there's a probability that (Edgewood) may never have complete coverage."
Younger said Qwest hopes to have "some good news soon" for Moriarty. As for Mountainair, he said, "we are unable to say anything at the moment."
Last September, Qwest officials told the Moriarty City Council that the company was planning to expand its digital subscriber line (DSL) Internet service to the area within 42 months.
Qwest promised to invest about $270 million in New Mexico in accordance with an agreement with the state Public Regulation Commission originally signed in 2001.
The most recent settlement between the state and Qwest stipulates high-speed Internet access for at least 50 percent of people in rural areas.
To find out if your area has Qwest broadband service, either call (800) 244-1111; visit www.qwest.com and follow the links for broadband service; or visit the Qwest kiosks at Coronado Mall or the Cottonwood Mall.
