Groundbreaking
For Gym Today
A groundbreaking ceremony for the new joint-use gymnasium at Vista Grande Community Center will be held today at 2 p.m.
State Sen. Sue Wilson Beffort, who has been instrumental in the push to fund the gym, is expected to attend along with Bernalillo County Commissioner Michael Brasher and other dignitaries.
The Fisher & Smith Memorial Gymnasium, named for East Mountain High student David Fisher and Albuquerque Police officer Richard Smith, will be shared by EMHS and Vista Grande. Fisher and Smith were killed during a shooting rampage in Albuquerque in 2005.
Dog Obedience
Classes Starting
Edgewood's animal control department will conduct six-week dog obedience classes starting today.
The classes will be held on Thursdays from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. and from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m.
Owners will learn how to train their dogs to have good house manners, come when called, walk politely on a leash, sit, lie down and stay. The class will include canine socialization and problem solving.
Dogs must have current vaccinations. The cost is $50 for the six-week class, and owners must register in advance. For more information, call 286-4518 ext. 4.
Friday Service
At Stanley Union
Stanley Union Church in Stanley will have a Good Friday service at 7 p.m. Friday.
The service theme is "Try to Remember" and will include Holy Communion. Easter morning service is at 11 a.m. Sunday with a message by Pastor Russell Lee on "Power Potential For You." Special music will include a saxophone solo by Gary King and a vocal number by Kellie McConville.
A potluck dinner will follow the service. Stanley Union is a community church where everyone is welcome.
Easter Cantata
Set for Weekend
First Baptist Church of Estancia will present an Easter cantata, "The Christ, The King, The Risen Savior!" on Friday and Sunday at the church.
The Friday performance will be at 7 p.m. and the Sunday show will begin at 11 a.m.
Easter Egg Hunt
Set for Saturday
First Baptist Church in Moriarty will host a free Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday from 11 a.m. to noon at Moriarty's City Park.
The Community Children's Spring Celebration event is for children from birth to sixth grade, who must be accompanied by an adult.
First Baptist will hold worship services on Easter Sunday at 9 and 10:45 a.m., with fellowship at 10:15 a.m.
Learn To Weave
A Dream Catcher
The Edgewood Parks and Recreation Department will host "Learn How to Weave a Dream Catcher" on Saturday, May 26 and June 23 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Edgewood Community Center.
The class, for teens to seniors, costs $15 and includes materials.
Participants may want to bring items such as feathers, pine cones, small dried plants or flowers, shells, etc., for a more personalized dream catcher. Participants will leave with the dream catcher they made in class and the skills needed to make dream catchers.

Saturday Series
Starting at Center
The Sandia Mountain Natural History Center in Cedar Crest will be opening its doors to the public the first Saturday of every month between March and September.
The First Saturday Series will include self-guided hikes, two hands-on exhibit rooms (Eco-Casa and Explorer's Center) and a bird viewing deck. Every month will have specific themes such as birding, guided hikes and family days.
This Saturday, Hiking Basics will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors will learn to properly prepare for a safe hike and minimize their impact through Leave No Trace hiking techniques.
On May 5, at Birds of the Sandias, participants can learn how to identify the diverse bird species of the Sandias and then spend the day using the new skills for birding on their own.
Education sessions begin at 10 a.m. Special equipment such as GPS units, field guides and binoculars will be available in limited numbers for checkout from the SMNHC staff.

RV Club Marks
1st Anniversary
The Good Sams Club, East Mountain Sun Chasers Chapter, is observing its first anniversary with a breakfast celebration on Saturday.
The event will be at 9:15 a.m. at the East Mountain Grill in Edgewood, followed by the regular monthly meeting at 10 a.m.
The April outing to the Good Sam Samboree in Deming as well as other 2007 outings will be discussed. The club travels together and does potlucks, sightseeing, photography, fishing, visiting and cookouts, and is always seeking new members.

Bethel Storehouse
Closed for Easter
The Bethel Community Storehouse in Moriarty will be closed Friday and Saturday for Good Friday and the Easter weekend.
Storehouse officials ask that donations not be dropped off while the storehouse is closed.
The storehouse will reopen Tuesday at 10 a.m.
