    Rock Art Lecture
    At Ranger Station
The Friends of Tijeras Pueblo will host a lecture and hors d'oeuvre fundraiser on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Sandia Ranger Station.
The lecture, "Rock Art and Shamanism in the Lower Pecos River," will be presented by Milford Fletcher, a retired scientist who worked with the National Park Service and has traveled widely in Africa, Asia and Europe examining rock art.
Although shamanism in U.S. rock art is controversial, lower Pecos rock art is generally accepted as being one of two areas in the U.S. where rock art reflects the practice of shamanism, according to a news release from Friends of Tijeras Pueblo.
In southwest Texas, where the Devils, Pecos and Rio Grande rivers meet, a culture of nomadic hunter-gatherers emerged more than 4,000 years ago, the release said. In shamanistic tradition, certain individuals entered a trance and interacted with spirits and animals on behalf of their community. These visions were recorded in vivid and stunning detail on the rock walls of shelters and overhangs.
Visitors will learn about this intriguing place and what's been recorded there.
Reservations are required, and a minimum donation of $15 per person will be collected. Proceeds will assist with the educational and interpretive center being built at the Tijeras Pueblo Archaeological Site.

Desiree's Buddies is a local group founded by the mother of an East Mountains child with the disease.
SMA is a genetic disease that causes a dramatic loss of strength and, in the worst cases, the loss of ability to swallow and breathe. The mind remains unaffected, while the muscles waste away, and SMA is a disease that is incurable, untreatable, fatal and underfunded.
