Fiesta Celebrates Pinto Bean
By Beth Hahn
Mountain View Telegraph
In keeping with tradition, the 25-year anniversary of Moriarty's annual Pinto Bean Fiesta promises to be bigger and better than ever.
The 2006 celebration of a local bean that made the Estancia Valley famous will include fireworks, a parade, live music, a carnival and dozens of arts and crafts vendors.
Events kick off Friday with a carnival in City Park and continue through Sunday afternoon.
Michaela Allen, the Moriarty Chamber of Commerce Bean Fiesta chairwoman for 2006, said this is the first time the event will include fireworks and a farmers' market featuring local growers.
This year's schedule includes:
A carnival at City Park, Friday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
Lions Club pancake breakfast, 7 a.m. Saturday, Lions Club building.
Bean Fiesta Fun Run, 8 a.m. Saturday, Moriarty High School track.
Bean Fiesta parade, 10 a.m. Saturday, Old Route 66 starting on west side of town.
Fiesta in City Park including live music, car show and antique tractor display, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
Heritage Rodeo honoree inductions, noon Saturday, rodeo arena.
Rodeo, 1 p.m. Saturday.
Dedication ceremony for DWI Memorial of Perpetual Tears, 1:30 p.m. Saturday, North Broadway and Abrahames Road.
Fireworks, after dark Saturday, Moriarty High School football field.
Dance, 8 p.m. Saturday, Moriarty Civic Center.
Chamber executive director Debbie Ortiz said the group is raffling an heirloom quilt and a Nintendo DS hand-held video game system to benefit its scholarship fund. Raffle tickets are $1 and can be purchased at many local businesses until Saturday at 5 p.m.
Three bands Don Chavez with Corazon y Alma, Donna and Michael Coy and Debra Jean Parker and the Buckarettes are scheduled to perform free concerts in City Park on Saturday, Allen said.
The 2006 Bean Fiesta Parade will be led by Don and Bruce King, and members of the King family will be in the parade in antique tractors, Allen said. The tractors, along with classic cars, will be on display in City Park after the parade.
In a change this year, the parade will start on the west side of Moriarty, near Tillery Chevrolet.
Anyone is welcome to participate in the parade, but must fill out a form and sign a waiver before entering. Forms are available at City Hall, local businesses and the Chamber of Commerce office as well as the Chamber's Web site.
Forms can be turned in to the chamber or to representatives at the parade's starting point, Tillery Chevrolet, on Saturday morning.
