Tijeras Wants Veterans' Memorial
By Matt Gomez
Mountain View Telegraph
An effort is under way to eventually construct a veterans' memorial in Tijeras.
Residents Jimmy Chavez and Dave Wilson told the Tijeras Village Council on Monday that they are organizing a committee for the memorial.
The goal, Wilson said, is to start with a Vietnam veterans' memorial and eventually add memorials for veterans from other conflicts.
"The goal is to have a veterans' memorial at the new park ... at the historic church," Wilson said.
Mayor Gloria Chavez said she spoke with the village engineer about developing such a project and got a positive response. The engineer, Chavez said, confirmed that the memorial could be completed in phases as Wilson mentioned.
"I think this is a great idea," Gloria Chavez said. "It's something that's never been presented to us."
Wilson said the committee is looking for funding, and recently learned they could possibly add the project to the village's infrastructure capital improvement plan a sort of wish-list the town presents to the state Legislature in hopes of funding village projects.
The council agreed to add the memorial to this year's ICIP as the fourth item on the list. ICIP items are listed in order of priority, starting at the top with the most important item.
Dora Garcia, the village's acting clerk and treasurer, said Tuesday she was still waiting for a response from village engineers regarding how much the village should seek for such a project.
Also Monday, Keefe Ricks, CEO and executive director of Prime Time For the Kids For the Kids, and several Prime Time youths presented the village council, mayor and Fire Chief Dave Bezy with plaques for their support of this year's second annual New Mexico Youth Day.
The event, held in Tijeras Aug. 5 and 6, featured a parade, sporting events and a spelling bee, among other things for children and their parents.
Chavez said she would like to see the event held in Tijeras in years to come, and Councilor Don Johnson expressed interest in working with Prime Time throughout the year on other activities.
