Telegraph Staff Reports
    U.S. Army Honors
    Manzano Grad
East Mountains native and 1998 Manzano High School graduate James Brasher, a staff sergeant from the 3rd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, was one of four paratroopers recently inducted into the 82nd Airborne Division branch of the Sgt. Audie Murphy Club.
Brasher lived in the East Mountains and attended Roosevelt Middle School. His wife, the former Julie Skye Livermore, also lived in the East Mountains and is a 1997 graduate of Manzano.
The Sgt. Audie Murphy Club is an elite organization that selects the best and most distinguished noncommissioned officers within the U.S. Army. Army-wide, only one in 1,000 senior NCOs is accepted.
Those selected demonstrate an ability to meet the challenges of leadership and caring for soldiers. The organization is named after Sgt. Audie Murphy, the most highly decorated World War II soldier. Murphy fought in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Germany and earned every decoration for valor America gives, including the Medal of Honor.
Inductees to the Sgt. Audie Murphy Club must first be nominated by their battalion command sergeant majors and then perform well on a series of demanding tests.
Brasher is stationed at Fort Bragg and has served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
