Fiber Art, Food on Tour List

Telegraph Staff Report
What do spinning, weaving, dyeing, alpacas, goats, hot dogs, jewelry and cheesecake all have in common?
The answer is the second annual New Mexico East Mountain Fiber Farm & Studio Tour scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
Last year, members of a fiber spinning group called Fiber Fanatics who get together at Good Fibrations in Edgewood, came up with the idea of hosting a self-guided tour of several fiber farms and studios.
Bethe Orrell owner of Good Fibrations, says the tour is advertised locally and nationally and is a great way of promoting the East Mountains area.
But the event is not only of interest to tourists. Spinning and weaving demonstrations, viewing and petting of sheep and goats and free kids' coloring sheets are just some of the activities that could possibly encourage local East Mountains residents to mingle, learn and support local artists.
Because of the wide-ranging locations of the farms and studios, the tour also makes for a nice drive for sightseeing. Whether traveling by main roads or back roads, mountain views, rolling hills topped with piñon and rocky canyons lined with dense forest thickets are sure to provide added enjoyment while visiting the studios throughout Edgewood and Tijeras.
Each farm and studio along the way is sure to have something for everyone. Items for sale will range from goat's milk and cheese to clothing, natural soaps, lavender and handspun yarns. Even more incentive to check out the tour is the door prizes. Each farm and studio will have entry slips that enable visitors to qualify.
Most of the farms and studios are participating in the tour on both Saturday and Sunday.
For information on each tour stop, their activities and locations, visit Good Fibrations on Old Route 66 next to Family Dollar and pick up a tour brochure and map, or call 281-5963.
