Community Gala About Giving

By Rory Mcclannahan
Mountain View Telegraph
I generally don't care that much for meetings, but lately I've been getting excited about our office meetings to plan the upcoming Community Assets special section and gala event coming up in September.
We have some changes slated for this year's event. For the past several years, we have been doing this very popular tabloid section dedicated to honoring folks who volunteer their time and resources to make our communities better places to live. These "unsung heroes" rarely receive recognition for their efforts, so we felt like this would be a worthy endeavor. It has proven to be just that, receiving numerous awards both statewide and nationally. This year's nominees should be no exception, and we're working on their stories right now.
We felt, however, that the celebration to honor these folks needed a little tweaking.
In the past, it was an invitation-only affair. We decided to open the event up to the public, so as many people as possible could turn out and celebrate our "community assets."
We didn't stop there, though. We wanted more than just a party; we wanted to create an opportunity to help the communities where we live, work and play.
This is going to be more than a party. We wanted to incorporate some sort of fundraising effort to benefit worthy causes.
This year, we will be holding our celebration Sept. 13 at the Moriarty City Park. We'll have music and our presentations and recognition of our unsung heroes.
Now, this is where you come in. You are going to help us raise money for local charities.
A couple of weeks ago, we sent out letters to area civic organizations offering the opportunity for them to set up vendor booths to sell food in order to raise funds that will benefit worthy causes here in our communities. If you did not receive a letter, we apologize and certainly welcome anyone to participate. If you belong to an organization or club and are interested, give us a call at 823-7101 and ask for Kitty Watkins.
We look forward to seeing everyone at this event highlighting positive efforts being done here in the East Mountains and Estancia Valley! Who knows, you could even meet Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in person. Well, maybe not Brangelina, but there will be some great folks getting the recognition they deserve.
They may not be famous, but they are sincere and deserving of movie star attention for the things they do.
