Moriarty Hosting
Forum on Downs
The city of Moriarty is hosting a public hearing at the Moriarty Civic Center on Tuesday at 7 p.m. to gather public response to a proposed move by the Albuquerque Downs to an area north of Interstate 40 and east of N.M. 40.
The public is invited to attend.
The New Mexico Racing Commission will conduct the meeting like a hearing with a stenographer present, said Linda Fischer, Moriarty city clerk.
People who would like to speak can sign up or provide written comments, Fischer said.
On Monday Mayor Adan Encinias told county and municipal personnel who had assembled at a special planning and zoning work session that he was hoping that Paul Blanchard, Downs president, would make a presentation at the hearing.
Library To Mark
Century of Service
Estancia Public Library will celebrate 100 years of service to the community with an open house on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
"We'll serve cake, punch and tea," Elaine Ramsey, librarian, told trustees at the Estancia Board of Trustees meeting on April 1.
The celebration coincides with the 100th birthday of Corinne Williams French who was born April 14, 1908.
French and her brother, Willis Williams, funded the building which is named in honor of their parents, Henry Clay Williams and Jennie Gertrude Call Williams who homesteaded in Estancia in 1904, according to a press release from the library.
In 1908 Mrs. A.H. Garnett from the Estancia Methodist Church used her husband's book collection to begin the library, according to the press release.
Subdivision Gets
New Fire Station
Torrance County District 5 fire department opened another main station in the Homestead Estates subdivision north of Moriarty "probably about two months ago," said Jason Trumbull, fire marshal.
Construction of the facility began in 2006 but was delayed by several factors including weather, and difficulty in getting construction materials.
