Estancia Coach's Hearing Postponed
Mountain View Telegraph
A "voluminous" amount of evidence has postponed a preliminary hearing for Estancia's track coach who has been accused of multiple felonies, according to a motion submitted by Michael Alarid, attorney for the defense.
The new date for the preliminary hearing is April 9 at Magistrate Court in Moriarty.
Grey Nevelos, head coach of boys and girls track and field, and cross country, has been charged with seven felonies four counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor and three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
"The allegations set forth in such criminal complaint relate an alleged course of conduct spanning many years, involving multiple incidents. ... The District Attorney's Office has produced and continues to produce a voluminous amount of discovery" in different formats including written, video and CD, the motion states.
Because of that evidence, the defense requested a postponement of the preliminary hearing to allow for more time to prepare, the motion states.
The request for continuance does not change any of the state's plans, and there have been no new developments in the case, Deputy District Attorney Tim Cornish said.
"The matter is still under investigation so I can't comment" on whether anyone else has come forward with new charges, Cornish said.
Nevelos pleaded not guilty to the allegations at his arraignment Feb. 15, posted a $50,000 cash or surety bond, and was released with an electronic monitoring or ankle bracelet system.
Conditions of release include an agreement to live in Albuquerque, not to leave the state and not have contact with any of the alleged victims.
He was placed on administrative leave Nov. 2 and has not been allowed on campus or to have contact with any students, Estancia Superintendent Carolyn Allen-Renteria said.
Nevelos was the high school athletic trainer and has coached the Estancia Bears track team since the 1988-89 school year. The Bears have won three state track titles during that period.
Nevelos was named the 2006-07 New Mexico High School Coaches Association state boys track and field coach of the year.
