Police Want Residents to Report Graffiti
Mountain View Telegraph
If there is spray paint in the Sandia Mountains, the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department wants to know about it.
"We've had tagging in the past," said Lt. Andy Nazario of the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department.
He said there is a difference between "tagging," which is simple vandalism, and gang signs, but he suggests that anyone who sees graffiti report it.
"I don't know if an untrained person could really tell the difference," he said.
The sheriff's department is concerned that gangs, predominantly from Albuquerque's South Valley and North Valley, are spending some of their time in the mountains. The reason is the same as for anyone who might head into the mountains.
"They're coming out to get away," he said. "If they came out here and were acting like good citizens, it wouldn't be a problem. ... They're marking their territory, and we don't want them claiming any territory out here."
Nazario pointed out that as the weather warms up, some crimes will tend to increase. That's part of the reason he is asking for people to be on the lookout for graffiti.
"It's important to me to know where the tagging takes place and to see if it's someone out to do damage, or if it is an actual gang tagging," he said.
That's key in an effort to find out who it is that's doing the vandalism and catching them.
Anyone who sees graffiti can call 281-1400 or contact Nazario at anazario@bernco.gov.
Anyone who has a digital camera on hand can also photograph the graffiti and e-mail it to Nazario along with the time, date and location.
