          Diabetes Cooking School Next Month
        New Mexico State University is holding a four-week diabetes cooking school at the Lions Club in Moriarty. Participants will receive recipe booklets, prepare meals, and taste foods made with reduced fat, sugar and salt.
        The class is free but is limited to 25 participants. The first session is Sept. 4, and class meets every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participants must commit to attending every class. Call 246-4790 for more information.
        Celebration Adds Sports Contests
        The Deputy James McGrane East Mountain Celebration will be held on Sept. 5, 6 and 7 at Vista Grande Community Center.
        This year there will be three sporting events: an adult softball tournament, youth basketball tournament and a 3-kilometer (1.86-mile) trail run/walk.
        The proceeds from the sporting events will go to advanced officer survival training for law enforcement officers throughout the state through a fund set up by the parents of James McGrane, a Bernalillo County Sheriff's deputy who was shot and killed during a traffic stop in Tijeras in 2006.
        The sporting events will be in addition to the celebration's usual complement of bands, information booths, food booths and other weekend activities.
        Old Fashioned Day At Stanley Church
        The Stanley Union Church will hold its annual Old Fashioned Day on Sept. 7.
        Worshippers are encouraged to attend services dressed up in old fashions. After services, the church will hold a celebration of Stanley's agricultural roots with a potluck and pie auction that benefit the church.
        Stanley Union Church is a nondenominational church on N.M. 41 just north of the N.M. 472 intersection.

        '$2 a Bag' Book Sale at Library
        The Edgewood Community Library will hold a "Special $2 a Bag" book sale on Sept. 6 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the library just east of the Autozone store on Old 66.

        Former Addict Will Speak on Drug Use
        The Torrance County DWI Program and Torrance County Drug Education Fund will be bringing David Parnell, a motivational speaker who is also a recovering meth addict, to the county on Sept. 11 and 12.
        On Sept. 11, he will speak at 7 p.m. at the Moriarty Civic Center.
        On Sept. 12, he will speak at Moriarty High, Estancia Middle and Mountainair Middle/High.

        Tax Talk at Wildlife West on Sept. 14
        Daniel Claussen of the Santa Fe Conservation Trust will discuss federal and state tax incentives, estate tax benefits and conservation easements at the Bean Barn at Wildlife West Nature Park on Sept. 14 from 3 to 4 p.m. Admission is free. Contact Kurt Menke at 265-0243 for more information.
        Potluck Picnic To Honor Cedarvale
        To commemorate an historical marker erected at the old Cedarvale schoolhouse, and the founding of Cedarvale in 1908, there will be a potluck and picnic in front of the schoolhouse on Sept. 18 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to Gail D'Arcy.
        The school was built sometime between 1917 and 1925, she said.
        D'Arcy began the process to have the school designated a historic site several years ago "because I loved my grandparents" who homesteaded there, she said.
        Bring chairs, water and a dish to share to the picnic.
        3rd Annual Chili Cook-Off Sept. 27
        The Sanctuary Zone will hold its third annual Chili Cook-Off on Sept. 27 beginning at 11 a.m. This year the event will expand into a farmers market and arts and crafts fair.
        "This is our primary fundraising event" for the nonprofit domestic violence emergency shelter located in Torrance County, said Rick Lopez, advisory board chairman.
        It costs $50 to compete in the chili cook-off, and $20 for a 10-foot by 10-foot booth space. To sample the chili costs $5.
        Participants are responsible for tables, chairs and coverage.
        There will be four different winning chili categories and a silent auction of a butcher hog that includes processing donated by Heritage Meats in Mountainair.
        Sundown Jazz will donate its time and a sound system.
        The event will be held in the parking lot beside the Neil Mertz Judicial Complex building.
        All proceeds will be donated to the Sanctuary Zone.

        Event To Outline USDA Loan Help
        A presentation by Vanguard Mortgage Services and USDA Rural Development will outline loan assistance programs offered by USDA. This information will help you decide which homeownership loan program is best for your income level. Loan assistance for current homeowners to rehabilitate or repair their home and loans for existing and startup businesses will be presented.
        The event will be held Sept. 24 at 6 p.m. at the Edgewood Community Center. Call 286-3071 for free registration.
